It's simple physics. In the red zone there's less grass to defend.

Of course other teams will design plays based on what they see on film but McD is said to be quite good at disguising the D.

I’m not buying it, unless you have some terminal velocity data.

It works against mediocre and bad teams.   Good teams generally have more success in the red zone.

It's why their D ranks so hugh during the regular season but struggles in the later stages of the playoffs.

Really wish they'd put more emphasis on preventing trips to the redzone.... even if it means giving up the occasional big play.

If the sauce is delicious,

the the defense must be malicious.

But please no. Not everything needs a nickname. And this one seems forced.

Sounds more like geography.

There was an interesting article how they are currently #1 in defense this year with a light box.  They use a two cover shell as you guys know which blankets overwatch for the pass, and the light shellis the best at stopping the run and short to intermediate passes.  They’ve drilled this into them since camp d it’s working.  What we don’t need is any more significant injuries.  That torpedoed us against the Bengals and Chiefs the last two years.

I agree with this analysis, but injuries do happen.  I think it's paramount for the twos and maybe threes to get some playing time in any games where the Bills are safely ahead.  We need, for example, Bishop to be locked and loaded if needed at safety.

OK, good results from the defense so far, but the Bills haven't been beating the NFL's elite.  They crushed Seattle after Seattle completely blew two opportunities through their own mistakes, not from what the Bills did.  (Although I agree that the Bills did stop the Seahawks on some of the plays, prior to their center launching a snap over Geno's head, or their center stepping on Geno's foot.  Did anyone get that center's name?  We owe him a beer if he plays in Buffalo in the future.)

If the Seahawks score on both those possessions, the game goes a different way completely.  And the Bills stats look more average.

I expect the Bills crowd on Sunday to impede the Dolphins to some extent, and once something bad happens to Miami, you know they'll be looking at each other, saying, here we go again.

Yeah I get where you’re coming from. It really is hard to criticize McDermott’s philosophy and scheme because the reality is that it works very well 90% of the time — but the 10% of the time when it hasn’t is magnified by being in some of the biggest games of his tenure against the toughest teams.

Maybe he adds ranch to it for our defense is supposed to taste bad to opponents.
