Nephilim17
Elam has flashed a few times over the years — and knows the system. That to me, even if the odds are against him, are worth more as a backup/potential start if Douglas leaves, than a 5th rounder. He offers no leverage in a trade for a high-end player. Even as a gamble he's worth more to us.

But out of that list, I’d go after Myles Garret and do Elam+1st+2nd. I would go 2 1sts for Myles Garrett as long as you know you can sign him when his first deal is done. Garrett across from Rousseau would be fantastic.

He's apparently not good enough to play and has been passed by guys like Ja'Marcus Ingram and Cam Lewis on the depth chart, yet he's not bad enough to get cut. He's also not good enough to at least showcase in the 4th quarter of a blowout to raise his trade value. He hasn't gotten in trouble off the field and doesn't have a clear reason to be in the doghouse with the coaching staff. He plays relatively well in spot duty and seemed to up his game in the playoffs. Kaiir Elam is an enigma. I have nothing to base this on, just a guess; is it that he’s just not that sharp? Is he slow at processing the playbook and concepts? He has the physical tools, right? I can think of few things that would drive the defensive-minded McDermott crazier than a player who is undermining the defensive calls by being out of position. Originally the excuse was he’s a man to man guy and not yet used to playing zone schemes. Well, he’s in year 3. It ain’t rocket science. The silver lining is that they found what they’d hoped Elam could be in round 6. So, even if Elam were to get cut after this year, it’s kind of a wash. His value is shot for the most part, but he has at least a first round prospect pedigree. I can imagine there's a team or two that may gamble on his upside along with a pick. Looking at the NFL landscape, Titans, Panthers, Browns, Saints and Giants look to be potential sellers in this market. I am excluding the Jets and the Pats as they are divisional rivals and would be unlikely to make any kind of trade with us. Here are some of the players I would have interest in. Titans: Jeffrey Simmons. A true elite force on the DL. 1.5 years removed from back to back All-Pro teams. Was injured to end the year last year and the Titans are an actual disaster. I think Elam + 1st gets this done and is probably close to fair value. Browns: Myles Garrett or Wyatt Teller Garrett's resume speaks for itself. He does seem to be picking up nagging injuries every year but hey, he's still elite. I don't think Elam + 1st gets this done, probably need a second or third at least. Wyatt Teller is a good OG. He's not worth Elam and a first. Browns probably jump at that. Elam and a 4th or two though? Tough call. Panthers: There is no one on this roster worth a first. There are a few player barely worth Elam and stuff. Pass. Saints: Mathieu or Lattimore Mathieu may be worth Elam with a late round pick swap. Still a good safety but lots of tread. He has been considerably healthy. I am intrigued by this one. Lattimore is still a great CB, but he's more of a man corner. Would probably take Elam and at least a second, and we don't have a CB need/not a great system fit. Pass Giants: Darius Slayton Free Darius Slayton. For real. This guy is Darnell Mooney 2.0, a solid WR who is absolutely languishing with a bad QB. Elam and a 4th/5th gets this done I think? He is good injury insurance and pushes Mack to his more natural role of "gunner." Who do you guys got? Run the cap numbers and get back to me. Spoiler: It won't work. Plus, any play Elam is next man up at boundary corner. That's more valuable than any "realistic" trade will garner us. 1

I don't think Elam has any more than LATE round pick swap and he's worth more than that to Buffalo, I think. Jeffrey Simmons is still a good run defender and brings a physicality the Bills lack but I don't think he nearly garners a 1st. Maybe Jeffrey Simmons, K Nick Folk and a 4th for one of the Bills 2nd rounders. Even then it's a tough match because TN would have to eat about $5M this season for Buffalo to afford Simmons. A pick swap for just Folk wouldn't surprise me. He's on a expiring deal.
Breakout Squad
No matter what cannot give up a 1st rounder. Using a 2nd to get a player can be a good investment (unless it’s last year of a deal).

NewEra
I don’t think the titans are interested in trading Simmons. I don’t think the browns are interested in trading Garrett. I don’t want teller as a rental and I’m not sure how much we’d owe him next season if we kept him. i don’t know enough about the saints D scheme but to know if Matheiu would be a quick fit in our system. If he is, I’d do it. I love Slayton, but I’d only trade for him if he were on the team next season and beyond. He’s just depth on this team and our WRs don’t have much injury history. meanwhile, Benford has injury history. If he goes out, who’s up next? Ingram? He’s been solid as a dime safety but I do t trust him as CB2 come playoffs.

Imo, if we lose Douglas or Benford for any period of time, we will be calling Carolina for Dane Jackson’s price. The Elam experience is clearly over in Buffalo.
