I bring this up every year around this time. I’ve often thought the NFL should go to a league-wide Bye Week at this point in the season. It’d give every team the chance to regroup and heal from injuries along with allowing newly acquired trade deadline free agents to acclimate to their new teams. They could even work in the international games on the week before, during, or after so as to minimize the impact and competitive advantage caused by jet lag. The fans would get a mid-season bye for Halloween and family time during an ever elongated season. And most years this week would be the World Series. Besides, I absolutely hate the fact with a staggered bye everyone has to look at the Standings with a bit of a squinted eye.

The NFL would not make money. The NFL wants to make money. They'd not do this.

You’ll notice I didn’t ‘propose’ it as a money making scheme.

So no football in the middle of the season, prime football weather?  Hard pass.

I’m not sure what weather has to do with it. Every team gets a bye at some point during prime football weather. Not to mention that more and more stadiums are indoors. Besides, if the international games were played that weekend it wouldn’t be void of football.

Pretty good concept honestly, all the other sports have an interruption for an all-star break.  what’s a one week break really gonna hurt?  plus that would make for good television with the sports shows.  the (pure) speculation would run rampant!!!

Exactly! And international soccer has a number of league wide off weeks throughout the season during which ‘national’ teams play.

As others have already noted, there is NO way the NFL will give up a week's worth of revenue during the season.  Further, why would owners want the country's most popular sport want to be off the airwaves for 12 days?

Not a bad idea but I don't think fans or the networks want to go without football for a week...plus it would lessen revenue as it would extend the season by a week without generating any money for the league or networks.

As mentioned above....why do the other leagues ALL do it? And my question is whether fans think it'd be a good idea. Heck the League just changed the entire look of kick-offs (an actual part of the game)! Is it so hard to imagine a tweak in the regular season schedule?

Turk, it wouldn't extend the season for a week. Every team gets a bye week now.

Oh I guess that's true, all teams would have a bye the same week...but it would create a situation with no football for an entire week during the year and I doubt the networks or the NFL want that.

@boyst said, the NFL would never sacrifice the revenue. With that being said, you could run 5 games (Thursday, 3 Sunday and a Monday) and then give all of those teams the previous or next week off. You’d have 22 teams on a bye and the other 10 either before or after. You could always give everyone one other bye.

Now you're onto something! Maybe the Mid-Season Bye is spread throughout the League over these TWO weeks. During those two weeks all International Games would be scheduled (even mid-week), thus reducing/eliminating the competitive advantage of travel. Following those two weeks, the entire NFL would be back on track with every team having played 9 games and make their final bye-less push to the post-season.

Yeah right… a weekend with no games will never happen.  Too much $ involved

If you look through the responses it appears we’ve landed on a compromise where every team’s bye would be spread across TWO weeks. And ALL international games would happen in that same span.

It's just a smarter thing to do a second bye week.

I'm telling you we will see a 20 week season with 2 bye weeks at some point. The season will start the weekend before Labor Day and the SuperBowl will be the day before President's Day.
