Josh Allen and sushi

Good west coast sushi is worlds apart from anything I’ve found in WNY. Part of it is city size/population, but part of it is also proximity to the pacific where so many of those yummy fish live.

Who said it was odd? I think it’s cool. I love sushi. I visited Tokyo this year and embraced the food scene. Who said anything about McDonald’s? What a bizarre interpretation. 

 

I was hoping to get QB1 hooked up with his comfort food.

Relax. The point is that it’s not unusual for people who visit other cities to seek out the foods that those regions are best known for. No?

Sushi needs to be flash frozen before it can be served, being close to the ocean is a myth. Most sushi fish isnt native to the Northwest. You can find great sushi in landlock Denver, Vegas, Phoenix…

There is a very good sushi place outside Mckinley mall - he should just get some platters delivered to fieldhouse.

I have taken my daughter there a few times when I am in town.

 

It is possible he wants rare, expensive items which are harder to find.

Kuni's is the Buffalo classic, but if Josh doesnt mind being among the people, Kumo on Transit in Depew is surprisingly really, really good.

 

More than likely the issue is that sushi is best in the restaurant, and there probably arent many sushi places in Buffalo large enough to deal with Josh;s celebrity. Maybe he can rent out all of Kuni's.

Kuni came here around 1978 at the invitation of Bob Rich Jr. He gets his fish straight from Japan through Alaska every few days. It is a world-class restaurant.

Proximity to the ocean doesn't matter with Sushi in the US. Food safety laws require that any fish that is served raw must be frozen all the way through to kill bacteria. But Seattle does have great sushi, due to the variety of fish available and the competition making places up their game.

Well that is certainly the other part of it. It isn’t an either or though. It’s a little bit of both. The one place that I mentioned is actually based out of Ontario. I don’t expect Buffalo to have scores of quality sushi places but it isn’t unrealistic to have a couple that are elite or at least very good. There are a few that are decent but none that would be considered “very good.”
 

Southern Junction is the perfect example (using BBQ instead of sushi). Buffalo isn’t a BBQ destination either. They have some places that are okay and have always had a few. Now they have one that is world class in Southern Junction. It compares to any great BBQ place in America. There are others that are decent but it’s nice to have one that is elite. That’s kind of what I’d like to see on the sushi front.

Is this really important?  Seattle is a world class city for seafood and probably has some of the best and freshest sushi in America.   If you want fresh blue crabmeat go to Baltimore.  If you want great wings and beef on weck come to Buffalo.

I would be 90% of sushi in america served in japanese restaurants is the same quality/style everywhere (Americans can't get enough of these overloaded rolls slathered in various sauces and "spicy tuna").  2% are superior in that they don't serve that crap and actually go to a purveyor daily to source their fish--serving simple pieces as such. 8% are supermarket/gas station quality.  

 

I'll bet Josh could have gotten that same Godzilla roll (or whatever), just as tasty, right in Buffalo.

Dinosaur BBQ was my jam when I lived in Syracuse (the irresistible aroma of living next door to it).

 

Had to hit up the Buffalo branch when I was visiting family earlier this year. Was very happy with my it.
 

As others have hinted at, great sushi / sashimi etc is definitely a delicacy.

 

But the Godzilla roll as mentioned is also fun as a comfort food. Still needs to be done properly.

I'm bias but I haven't had good sushi on the east coast at all.   Good sushi in WNY is the equivalent to gas station sushi in Hawaii.

Dinosaur BBQ is pretty good. Southern Junction was a finalist for a James Beard award (first Buffalo Restaurant in 34 years to achieve that along with Bar a Vin). There are levels to this and that’s kind of the sushi point. Buffalo has a couple of Dinosaur BBQ level sushi places but don’t have any Southern Junction level sushi places.
