Chiefs may trade for WR Hopkins

Hopkins isn't a true Alpha anymore, that is true. But if you don't think he can make some noise in the possession role Rashee Rice thrived in, and even Juju did (for 1 game)- you're probably going to disappointed. This doesn't put KC over the top, but they could get 80-90% of Rice's production from Hopkins.

There's a reason,  we got a 6th back as well but Cooper is far superior to DHop at this stage, I'd much rather give up the late 3 for Coop

I'm not sure how much of a separator Hopkins is at this stage of his career... I'll be interested to see how he fits in with Mahomes. Mahomes has never been the type to throw up contested catches and they've never had somebody like that in their offense.

 

But he is better than Skyy Moore so obviously it is a good trade for them. Just not really a big needle mover IMO.

Cooper is better than Hopkins right now. Not even a question. He's younger, his physical abilities haven't diminished as much, he has better separation skills, he's less injury prone. If you don't believe me, believe the NFL market - Cooper went for a 3rd, Hopkins went for a 5th. That tells you where the players are valued.

 

I don't know, I can't bring myself to worry too much about this trade. The Chiefs are undoubtedly better off now than they were last week, but they are undoubtedly worse off than they were in August. They were always going to trade for a WR once Rice went down. This trade means they won't be trading for Kupp so to me that's a net positive. It was a move that they HAD to do, not a move that pushes them over the top.

I'm sorry man but you are just wrong on this one, and weirdly boastful about it. Your mind is stuck in 2022. This is like saying "Stefon Diggs is as good as Nico Collins" and scoffing at anyone that disagrees. Hopkins has legitimately fallen off. When WRs fall off they fall off fast. Hopkins is still a good player, but he is not close to a 1,500 yard WR like Rice was trending before Patty gave him the ol' Tonya Harding.

Everyone saying Hopkins is washed, you're nuts. Over 1K yards and 14.1 yd average last season, and a 12-year veteran badass. He's still a great football player, and he will have Jesus H. Mahomes throwing to him. This is a huge pickup at great value for the Chiefs; not to mention WR is a big need for them. 

 

If you grade the two trades on which team is now more likely to win a title, I favor KC. If you grade on value for the player, I think it's a wash.

Exactly. The price would’ve been higher for the Bills than it was for the Chiefs, because:

 

1. (Major) We would’ve needed TEN to eat more salary, and they’re not going to do that for free

2. (Minor) The conditions to make it a 4th are both making the Super Bowl and Hopkins playing 60% of snaps. In TEN’s mind, the 6-0 defending champs are probably a better bet to make the SB than the 5-2 team that’s never beaten Mahomes in the playoffs. 
 

On #1 alone, I think it would’ve cost the Bills about as much for Hopkins as they paid for Cooper. 
 

For the record, I’m HOPING that Hopkins is washed. I’m EXPECTING that he’ll show his age and be nowhere near the destructive force we saw in Houston, but still be pretty effective at times. It’s hard for me to envision him failing on a crucial 50/50 ball in the playoffs. But I also don’t think it would’ve been worth it for us to trade for him.

 

IMO, if we’re gonna spend more picks, let’s get someone who’ll help this year AND in the future.
