Bills sleepwalking

Recommended Posts

Bills D in the 2nd half is tied for 2nd in the NFL with Denver only allowing 6 points/game.  Only the Steelers have been better allowing only 5.1 points in the 2nd halves of games.

Whatever they do at halftime is pretty amazing on D.

Outside the Ravens game, the first half D hasn't been terrible either, averaging 12.3 points allowed which you think should be really good, but somehow ranks 20th in the NFL.

Overall tho, the Bills rank 6th in the NFL allowing only 18.3 points per game.

IMO aside from the adjustments the game script changes really help our D in the 2nd.  teams not being able to just grind out with runs because they fear the bills scoring quickly puts them in a worse position vs the mcDefense.  clearly the adjustments showed improvement vs houston, zona, and to a lesser extend bmore even tho they had solid leads on us early.   The O laying eggs early is our biggest issue.  giving the ball back to the opponents early in the game lets them build confidence and do some creative stuff on O against us, it took some mana for us to have a nice first half lead vs the seahags, but they clearly lost compsoure.

i will give the o a lot of credit for overcoming some really crummy penalties in several drives on sunday.  i think that helps the d, who just don't do well off of 3 and outs where the opponents get some mo.

It hasn't. I put the stats up the other day.. The Bills have been top 10 in first quarter points every year since 2020, top 5 twice. They have been slightly less good on defense, they were poor in 2022 (ranked in the 20s) and middle of the pack (14th) last year. But before that they were best in the NFL in first quarter defence two years in a row in 2020 and 2021 and then 3rd in 2019.

So,

in the first quarter / half of every game, you have full confidence in the Bills?

In this iteration of the Bills? No. Because they have shown they have a problem there. Have I in previous years? Yes, because they have demonstrably been really good there.

Well,

at least we agree on this year’s version of the Buffalo Bills.

the usual first half stumbling, mumbling and bumbling won’t get the team far when it really starts to matter.

It won't they have to fix it. Was interesting to me that both coordinators mixed up tendencies early yesterday. I think it is mainly an inexperience at coordinator issue. Hopefully yesterday was a meaningful step forward.

They’ve had to fix it for a long time.

how can you say otherwise?

For me,

it’s same old, same old.

SOS!!

They haven't. The evidence tells you conclusively they have been a good to very good first Quarter team for 5 seasons. Until this one.

I don’t really give a crap about the past.

look at all the stats you want, anyway you want.

either way, the first quarter or so, most of the time, the Bills suck, and look lost, and discombobulated.

you would need to be hit across the head with a 2x4 to not see it

This season - yes. Before that - not at all. And you are arguing a untruth to say otherwise. This isn't an opinion. It's a fact.

Again,

I don’t give a rats arse about previous seasons.

my focus is on this season.

why do you have a hard on trying to prove the irrelevant past?

I don't. But you keep making untrue statements so I'll keep calling you out on them. When you stop, I'll stop saying you are factually wrong.

I have already agreed with you on this season.

Ok,

at this point, we agree on this season.

that a positive.

we’ll leave the past in the past, and move onward and upward.

There are a couple of games this season where the Bills simply were not ready to play in the first half - what I call sleepwalking.  This past Sunday they fixed that issue; however, the question is, will this good performance carry forward when we play top-teams like the Chiefs?

I agree.

the Bills seem to be unprepared to start games, rather than prepared.

and,

they don’t seem to be able to make adjustments until the half.

just my ignorant opinion.

The only instance I've seen this year was the Titans game where they were coming off the big Monday Night win vs the Jets and they were half-stepping around until the halftime gut check. That one didn't really bother me because I'd known it was coming since the Jets game ended.

Other times, they've played poorly, but it wasn't because they were sleepwalking; it was more an issue with execution than effort, imo.

What about the Ravens game?  Could not stop the run when we knew it was coming.  Sleepwalking plus outplayed in every phase of the game.
