Keon Coleman 5th In Rookie Receiving Yards

the special thing about him to me is what he does with the ball in his hands.  he does have good hands too, but when he has the ball his balance and coordination lets him make small moves that lead to big gains.  he did it vs tenn and vs baltimore.  turning short catches into big gains breaks the D's back.  if he gets his routes better and builds more rapport with josh on the scrambles he could crack 1k this season.

His limitations are what made him a 2nd round pick.   With a season or two in the NFL, he will overcome them.

i hope so.

 

people talk about the bust rate at qb in the first round, but if you look at the top qbs, they are so overwhelmingly guys who were picked super high (brady and brock being exceptions, obv).  what is interesting to me is how many WRs come out at different points and are just monsters.  Jefferson was a high pick and a silly good college player, but he was what, the 4th or 5th guy taken that year?  diggs, adams, ayuik, our own coleman and many others fell past the first round.

 

It seems like there are mental and less measured traits that lead to top flight wr play.

I don't know how it looks after today but holy cow did Keon get some highlight reel catches. Cooper was a non-factor today (I'm not worried, bad conditions, defensive matchup etc) and Keon still showed out.

Cooper showed up by drawing attention.  Giving Coleman more single coverage.

Keon has been great having a better impact than I hoped for or expected (and I expected him to have a decent impact). I knew he was going to be a capable NFL player when they showed his draft day visit with McBeane and he talked about how at Michigan State he went and learned what the offensive linemen were doing so that he can understand how much time he had. I also liked Beane saying he was happy Coleman ran a "slow" 40 time saying it will help to get him.

After today's game, Keon is 24th in the league in yards for a receiver. He is still 4th in yards for rookie WRs.

 

Rookies: 

1. Brian Thomas, Jr.: 573 yards 5 TDs (23rd overall pick)

2. Malik Nabers: 427 yards and 3 TDs (still to play this week) (6th overall pick)

3. Marvin Harrison, Jr.: 411 yards and 5 TDs (4th overall pick)

4. Keon Coleman: 396 yards and 3 TDs (33rd overall pick)

 

FYI: Xavier Worthy (28th overall pick) now has 235 yards and 3 TDs (but he also has 47 yards rushing and 2 rushing TDs). So, 282 total yards and 5 total TDs.

 

Fourth is pretty good, especially considering there were 10 WRs selected in the first 37 picks (Keon being picked 33rd), seven of them ahead of Keon. It's still early, but then Keon seems to be improving each week also. The 2024 wide receiver draft class definitely has a chance to be one of the best at the position.

 

[NOTE: stats are prior to the Dallas/San Fran and Steelers/Giants games in week 8. Though the only rookie still to play is Nabers, who is already ahead of Keon. As far as overall receiving, it looks like only Deebo and Darius Slayton could pass him, so he may be 25th or 26th overall in receiving yards after these games.]

I’ll take it.  For A rookie with nobody to really take attention off him to be in the top 30 of receivers at halfway(close enough) through the year and starting to do more, could not be happier for a guy drafted in the 2nd round.

Agreed, he dropped to the second round because he was not polished but now he looks quite polished and it is still early in year
