the Daboll/Schoen regime - on the brink, it seems

They tried to trade up for a QB in this past draft and had no problem with that being broadcast on Hard Knocks. I think that was their plan: one season to see if he could develop and a second as a bridge. They just couldn’t complete a trade up to get a QB they wanted in the draft.

Exactly.  Ownership was clearly supportive of them trying to get one of the top QBs in the 2024 draft despite the financial commitment to Jones - so it would make total sense for them to be given that same opportunity in 2025.

Schoen and Daboll remind me of some junior colleagues I knew at work who got the opportunity to take on lead responsibility.

But they weren't all humble and hungry, they were swagging it with an "I Got This" attitude.

And they stumbled.

The worst thing that happened to Daboll was probably being named AP NFL Coach of the Year for 2022.

I think it totally went to his head.

Daboll never really seemed to be the type that would succeed at head coaching to me, IMO.  Too hot headed, too rash, too emotional...great OC...does not have the proper traits for a good Head Coach which needs to be far more CEO than X's and O's related.

If we think Schoen has failed….What do we think about Dan Morgan?!!

Dan Morgan didn't trade a boatload of picks for the opportunity to draft Bryce Young. He walked into the worst roster situation in the league this season (his first as GM). What's he supposed to do?

You think the Bills' OL is just "average?"  Anybody have the latest rankings?

Now we're going to get into a debate about which metrics constitute the level of play for that unit.  And there'll be no agreement, but in terms of running the ball I based it off their 3 primary RB's are averaging 4.3 ypc (630 yards on 147 carries) which is about league average.  In only 2 games have those backs surpassed over 100 yards rushing (at NYJ and at MIA).

Way off topic anyway.

I called it back when they paid Jones and snubbed Barkley.

Some of these GM's are clueless or maybe they just over-think things.

Honestly they shouldnt have signed either.     Barkley is playing well now because teams cant load the box against him.  With the Giants he was averaging under 4 yards a carry and missed an average of 4 games a year.   The Giants were not the type of team to be in a position to spend 12.5 million dollars a year on a running back, especially a 27-year-old running back with an injury history.    That said, the Jones contract doomed them.

What they should have done was not signed either of them and used the 52 million they would have saved to bring in Kirk Cousins, Baker Mayfield, or Sam Darnold and looked to draft a younger quarterback as soon as possible.

They made a terrible mistake.  Thought Jones was Allen when he was closer to Tyrod.  Saying it is an insult to Tyrod.  Extend Barkley.  Tag Jones.  And trade him if you can.  This year give Barkley a market deal and push the deal across the goal line.   Trade or cut Jones and draft Penix.  Nabbers is great.   However, he has little impact in winning the games.  Unable to read the room when the owner wants Barkley is embarrassing.

Daboll and Schoen risked possibly their 1 shot on Jones.  Who at no point was a franchise caliber player at any level of football.  They made their bed and now are going to be fired.  Daboll we be an OC somewhere.  Schoen may come back as an assistant to Beane.

Beane and Mcdermott knew they were going to go down with their guy at Qb.  That got them Allen.  A poor season in 18 but never looked back.  Thinking 2017 was the core of the franchise would have been a massive mistake.  The roster turn over from 2016 to 2019 was one of the more significant changes in the league.  Daboll and Schoen lucked into a playoff spot and thought they were (close). They were miles away.

When you don't have a QB worth paying, you can afford to pay the best player on the team - your sole reason for being able to win games.

$12.5M for Barkley is a drop in the bucket compared to $40M for Daniel Jones.

Humble and hungry is great life advice.  I'm in sales and have this mindset

I think he was dumb to agree to work for Tepper....unless he agreed to give him several years and to stay away from football ops

It was weird coming from the Bills, that DaBoll/Schoen went with keeping the mediocre QB and also not trading Barkley that year.  It seemed like the opposite of what the Bills did, when they decided to move on from Tyrod and move on from paying RBs (moved on from Shady).

There have been rumbling that the Mara ownership has become more hands on over the last decade also coinciding with the teams regression. My personal belief is when Jones had his one decent season which he had that great playoff game Mara felt they had their guy at QB and directed Schoen to resign him. Barkley I think he arrogantly thought they could do better without paying on Schoen was perfectly fine letting him gone. The whole organization for a decade now has reeked of mismanagement internally.

Agree. They should have let Jones walk, tag Barkley again, and then let him walk. It's been pretty obvious Jones is not a franchise QB. Crazy they signed him to a long term deal. Now they have an elite WR and no one around him.

Ownership wanted Jones. Their jobs were contingent on making him work.

Good, but I'd add Reid and Mahomes, both of whom are stone-cold HOF locks. Reid also had McNabb, who had a very good career overall.

Reid would not be on his McNabb days alone. And McNabb is not a HOFer.

I'm starting to think there's no such thing as HOF Coaches. Just coaches lucky enough to have a HOF QB.

Yes BUT if they were going to keep Jones they should've kept Barkley who was a big reason for Jones best year.
