sherpa Posted October 18 Posted October 18 Tony Bennet, the amazingly successful basketball coach at the University of Virginia announced a shocking immediate retirement, effective immediately. Completely classy man. Took an ACC program that was not Duke or UNC Chapel Hill to the peak. As a local resident, this man is so good in every way. A treasure. If I was a parent of a high school basketball player, there is no single coach i would want my son to play for. Simply, complete quality at every level. On a larger note, this resignation is the canary in the coal mine of the effect of NIL in college sports. 1 1 Quote

Like Jay Wright before him, we are losing quality coaches who have plenty left in the tank because the rules of the game have changed. NIL and the portal have changed the landscape completely. They don’t need the money, and I don’t blame them for seeking quality of life. 2 Quote

To be fair, he has made enough money in his career that he likely does not need to work again in his lifetime and his kids will have some semblance of generational wealth. Lets not compare to a guy just getting by or just coming up who needs to make all he can to secure a future for himself and his family. Quote
sherpa Posted October 22 Author Posted October 22 This has nothing to do with money, and nobody is comparing him to anybody. Not sure how that came up. His retirement is a great loss of an incredibly honorable man, tremendous coach and beloved individual to his players, university and community.
