Rapp was better than fine last night. Gives me hope that he might actually turn into a solid starter with a better partner.

Safety is all about partnerships. You need a solid guy in the other role. His rookie year showed he has the talent to be a starter in the league. His final 2 years in LA were solid too.

His best years came with:

Eric Weddle in 2019

Jordan Fuller in 2021

Nick Scott in 2022

Ironically for us, the latter 2 partners he had are both in Carolina right now lol

Before going out injured, he also had John Johnson in 2020 who turned in a pretty good season.

He’s actually always been a solid starter imo. Not great, not awful. Decent.

That play I posted in another thread. He tries to shoot the gap that Bernard and Dorian are headed for.

I saw tries because if you watch it he trips himself on the engaged teammate, gets clogged up in the play, stopping Bernard (who also played this exact snap poorly) from filling in the hole where, had he continued outside would have forced Hall back to.

Running in sand is accurate and I think more often than not why he hesitates or tries to cheat on a decision.

He had a really nice tackle for loss against Hall I think didn’t he? My mom told me today she thought he had a good game (not that she’s an expert) and was happy for him to be playing. I think he’s been fine outside of a few bad angles. Not great but overall, at least they’re not getting torched

Yeah, that's a fair assessment.

In my mind, I compare him to Taron Johnson, and that's how I can see that Hamlin isn't as good as I think the Bills need.  Johnson is solid, over and over. Tight on his assignments, and I don't mean tight on his man every time, but when he gets beat he still keeps himself in the play. Solid tackler. Smart.

Hamlin has learned the position well and really applies himself, but I don't think he has the instincts. I think that's difference between him and Johnson.

I'm excited about Dorian Williams. He has instincts and explosive quickness. He closes so fast, and he too is a sure tackler.

which he makes up for with lack of coverage skills.

Why can't we get Bishop on the field w Rapp?

Might be the bomb where he was out of position. He will eventually get in but he’s not processing the nfl fast as of yet. Currently Hamlin gives us the best chance to win. Bills win the Texans game if that doesn’t happen. Hamlin is a low-average nfl starter but he’s not losing games.

Most say he’s slow, weak and small, but, fundamentally, he’s a damn good tackler.

He actually wraps up the ball carrier at the knees.

That is a lost skill / art in the game of football today.

He won’t lay any big licks on anyone, but he’ll make his tackles.

I give him props for that.

Most NFL players have no idea how tackle, or have forgotten how to tackle.

But if you can't catch them or are out of position to make a tackle what good is it to know the proper way to tackle another players ?? I like the guy but he's not a starter in the NFL, he's a good depth player but not a starter ...

Ripley's Believe It or Not...

According to the Bills Wire, Hamlin was our 2nd highest graded defensive player versus the Jets.  Hamlin was graded even higher than Taron Johnson who's impressive pick sealed the victory.

Top Five PFF grades for the Jets game...

Rapp...   76.4

Hamlin...   71.4

Groot...   70.7

Taron...   67.2

Cam Lewis...  62.7

That's why I am defending him. Hamlin isn't an amazing player, but he certainly isn't bad. He is a serviceable starter. Should we upgrade? Sure. But he is not a terrible liability out there like everyone is saying.

Some of the ire is contextual.  We were spoiled by Hyde and Poyer who were among the best tandems in the league for a long while.   As you say, Hamlin is a "serviceable starter."  That's not what we're accustomed to and that's not what we want if winning a Lombardi is a goal.  But Hamlin starting is not some kind of bad joke.

Can’t disagree with you more. Especially as a serviceable starter. Way too slow, poor angles, and poor coverage skills.  Dude shouldn’t even be on the roster let alone starting.

I agree.

I didn’t say he was a great player, just a good, sound tackler.

Every player on the team has a couple of shortcomings.

I would consider starting him on my college team with those tackling skills. NFL DB's have to be able to cover and that is where Hamlin struggles. He also seems to be out of position or take bad angles.

Is Sauce as good as advertised?

skinny kid who can’t / won’t tackle anyone.

very grabby in coverage.

not saying he’s crap, or wouldn’t want him on my team, but he’s not what people want him to be, or think he is.

he rarely blows a tackle.

I credit him for that.

look at much bigger, faster players that whiff on tackles because they rely on speed and size, and don’t know how to tackle.

Unfortunately most of his tackles are jumping on the pile of an already downed player.

Did you not see what happened when Bishop was in? I wish I could unsee it. I hope McD’s magic sinks in soon in case we have to put him out there.

Ridiculously bad comment. He got beat over the top in his first start, great lesson to be learned early. He was not any worse than Hamlin after that. He also had to take on the load of playing next to someone not good at his position. Not an easy thing to do for a rookie. He should be taking his lumps learning next to Rapp so we have a higher quality athlete and player come the playoffs. It’s time to get Bishop up to speed and not create another Elam situation.

Nothing personal, but I trust McD’s evaluation on DB’s more than yours. It also doesn’t help that my son (recruited as a college DB/QB) would text me every time he took a bad angle or misread a play. He was texting a lot. Too much. I have high hopes for Bishop, but not until he’s ready.

Elam is a ball hawk and playing Safety might be a good fit for him IMO.

Hamlin is fearless when it comes to tackling. He's been to the other side and back for his football team. Damar Hamlin is the heart and soul of the Buffalo Bills now. I love this guy.

Better that question be asked to Senior McDermott,

The powers that be, likely feel he isn’t ready yet, is what it is, me, I’d be rotating him in for a few snaps every game, but that’s probably just me…,
