Closing in on a third of the way through the season: what do we think about the new kickoff rule?

In an article: https://bleacherreport.com/articles/10139116-roger-goodell-praises-nfls-incredibly-promising-dynamic-kickoff-rule-change

Roger Goodell says it is very promising and they are seeing lower impacts on injuries.

Goodell also said, "there could be more changes to the kickoff, including potentially moving the kick line back to make it more difficult for the ball to go out of the back of the end zone or have touchbacks that go out the back of the end zone start at the 35-yard line instead of the 30."

Just over 30% of kickoffs have been returned this year. This is up from 22% last year

Clearly not effective as teams still feel starting the ball at the 30 is worth not risking a return. Next year the NFL will move it to the 35 and then they will get the returns they desire

35 is a joke imo. 25 yards and a large number of kickers are in range.

F That.

True.

Not our kicker, of course.

But teams with good kickers will only need to get a couple first downs to nab 3 points.

That's the point, though.  Right now, teams are conceding the 30 too much.  They want more returns.  So, if they make the penalty for a touch back a little harsher, they are hoping more teams put the ball in play and try to cover the kicks.  Ultimately, in an ideal world, just about every kick should be returned.

More power to you if you think moving it that far is something worthwhile.

Just penalize them harshly with where it’s at now. Again, 25 yards to be in scoring range for most teams is a joke.

Seems they really have their mindset on increasing kickoff returns and increasing players safety.  This would be the best options under the current format imo.

1.)  Move the kicker back five yards.

2.)  All touchbacks only go to the 20 yard line if the ball either lands in the end zone or is caught in the end zone.

3.)  If a kicker kicks it through the back of the end zone then the returning team gets it at their own 35.

Creates maximum incentive for teams to return kickoffs.

Terrible and a waste of time. Seriously, the play looks bush-league.

Agree. I hate it. I'm against all gimmicky solutions to problems like this. Either you want kick offs as a meaningful exciting play in the game OR you worry about the full speed impact injuries. You kinda have to pick your poison. This strange halfway house suits nobody.

They took the onsides kick out of the game which I hate.

There was a proposal that instead of kickoffs, give the kicking team a 4th and 15 from some place on the field and let them go for it or punt.  I like that idea.

“Dynamic”? Guess I have a different interpretation of the word.

Yeah, they just had to give it a name didn’t they?  And it failed.  Seems like after Bass kicked one out of bounds, the Bills just decided to kick them all out of the end zone.

I saw in one game where the kicker was short in trying to get it into the target area, which put the ball at the 40.  It’ll be interesting to see if every team will start just kicking it far out.

Just kick it off from the 15 yard line, and we will see  the returns they are wanting, this ain’t rocket surgery,

Just get rid of kickoffs entirely.  The offense can start at the 20 like the original touchback.  Or if you want to try onsides you can do an onsides

Kickoff TDs are arguably the most exciting play of the game. Seems dumb to take the chance of those away just because the commissioner is a dope that can't stop himself from tinkering with the game.
