This guy for next GM. He’s mediated!    Hire saleh fire everyone else.  Trade everyone each week who did not do well.  Get a new sports science staff who can prevent broken bones and stuff…I mean no one has ever thought of that…

Von Miller has a cap hit of $23.9 million in 2025. Cutting him would save $8.5 million against the cap and would incur $15.4 million in dead money.

Matt Milano has a cap hit of $16.1 million in 2025. Cutting him would negatively affect the cap (loss of $1.1 million) and incur $17.3 million in dead money. Not sure how trading affects that or not.

Ed Oliver has a cap hit of $20.8 million in 2025. Cutting him would negatively affect the cap (loss of $5.7 million) and incur $26.5 million in dead money.

Dawson Knox has a cap hit of $14.0 million in 2025. Cutting him would negatively affect the cap (loss of $2.9 million) and incur $17.0 million in dead money.

Seems like a lot of bad moves for Buffalo. But someone else can speak to how trading might impact those numbers. I don't know exactly how that works myself.

Imagine how much worse off we would be without Beane the Wizard (tm)

In the 2024 NFL 2-3 years isn't a semi rebuild, it is a full on rebuild. And you don't have a full on rebuild if you have the QB situation figured out.

Von Miller is likely gone next year. I will be shocked if he is still around.

Milano is interesting because he is only $1M off the roster than on. They do have an out after 2025. So in theory that could be a player they do something with. But I don't think so. I think Milano will have to make a decision on whether to extend in Buffalo long term at a lower price or try and get paid on a series of more lucrative short term deals to account for the fact he has been a major injury liability.

Knox also has an out after 2025. However I think an extension at a more reasonable cost could happen.

Call it whatever you like…the point is, the Bills have their work cut out for them, and they’re likely not gonna be there by next year, as much I wish it were the case…

So, I’m thinking 2026 is more likely, based on your info of Knox and Milano, and Miller…

I know almost nothing about the cap as it doesn't much interest me, but I want to throw this in there....using the Von Miller example of saving 8.5 million, correct me if I'm wrong, but that doesn't account for whatever roster spot is used to fill that void, correct? So, in effect, if they replace him with a player making something close to 8.5, there's really no saving at all. The only benefit that I see is that the replacement would have to contribute more to wins than Miller, otherwise it's not a plus.

True, BUT if he’s not making much contribution, you have to eat dead cap at some point or you are wasting cap on him until the bitter end.  Sometimes you have to take your medicine.   Right now, he’s pretty much a non-factor.  You play your young guys, hope they develop to a better replacement and spend that extra money improving the team.  Should be a net gain of ~7M when all is said and done.

Next offseason…

-Cut Miller

-Cut/trade Milano (30 years old, and back 2 back season ending injuries- he’s toast, just like White was, as much as I hate to say it)

-Trade Oliver (Just not what we need in the middle of the line)

-Trade Knox (he’s a $14 million blocker- ridiculous! Let Kincaid shine and go back to 21 personnel)

We HAVE to clear the dead weight imo…

Entering year 2 of a 2-3 year semi rebuild, how would this affect our cap?

Pretty sure Von is the only guy we can jettison and gain cap space.  The others dead cap only subtracts from our cap room.

Bad ideas

“Right now” Von is a non factor?  🤣 man oh man.

yes, right now, as a suspended player, he’s a non factor.  When he’s not suspended, he’s not a non factor.  Is he suspended for the entire 24 and 25 seasons?

They are stuck with most of those players one more year except maybe Von.  They can get out after this year and save cap space

Benford, Rousseau cause they play premium positions

And those guys are gearing up to cash in big!

So pretty much a bad, bad idea.  Sounds right.

Just in time for new stadium. Hopefully they build a monster.

Even when not suspended,  Von is nothing more than average at this point, no where near worth his contract.  You can plug in AJE or even Solomon and have little to no drop off.

His play over the first 3 games was worthy his 8.5m contract imo.  If healthy, I’m quite confidant he’ll be worth his contract.  This isn’t 2023.  He’s looked good

you’re comparing Solomon to him after watching the kid play for like 5 minutes 🤣

It’s not a full rebuild, as we have our QB, o-line, some solid LBs and CBs…

But our cap situation is truly atrocious, and needs to be fixed…otherwise we are just spinning our tires with mediocre drafting…

We also have to decide to pay Benford and/or Douglas.  Cook will also be entering final year of his contract (May be they let him walk)

I’ll take Solomon in 2024 + 8.5M in cap vs having Von and it’s not even a question.  Von is washed.

I agree with this minus the washed part. Think he’s still effective in the role we use him; situational pass rusher.

Does that justify such a contract? Probably not. You could get a more impactful player who’s plays a significant amount of snaps, be that on O or D.

I think extending Benford is a no brainer…I think Douglas walks…And I think due to our cap situation the Bills can’t afford to extend Cook- but that doesn’t mean they won’t…Remember they are also likely to extend Groot in the offseason…

Further reconfirming my thoughts on how you see the game

edit-  I love Solomon.  I think he’s going to be a valuable player this season.  The current version of Miller is better….and he’s a proven closer.  He’s a champion that has a track record of making big plays in big moments.
