Why isn't Brady using more Play action?

All that definitely applies to just Josh too…a common theme in these bad games is he usually watches the defense get smoked early and tries to press a bunch, then the defense settles down a bit and he settles down a bit 

 

Baltimore was similar, the first half of Tampa a couple years back was similar, cincy playoff game was similar, there’s probably more but those immediately jump to mind 🤣

At that point, play action just becomes passing with an additional step & doesn't benefit anyone if you're not making anyone bite.

 

 

Our running game's alright. Not great, but solid.

 

If anything teams are edging closer to the line, not farther away. They'll keep doing it too, until we show signs of beating them deep a few times.

I think it's a brilliant point that play action puts Josh in a good tempo and rhythm. He's also a master of disguise and ball tricks and doing it comes so naturally to him.

 

Conversely, when he's annoyed and feeling rushed, he does ball tricks like flipping the ball back on the field a split second after stepping out of bounds... He's a real teenager!

In his career Allen has a +25 QBR in play action vs regular passing situations 113.9 vs 87. You can see why Josh is so good with playaction with his timing. It's almost like playaction gives Allen a more traditional pocket cadence. Right when he hits the top of his drop he either rips the ball out or you see him moving forward in the pocket still in the rhythm of the play. It's always very decisive. So it's a pretty exciting concept that we have developed this run game under Brady which should allow for a lot more of what Allen does best.

If you look at the chart below in the PA% column it shows the % of totals passes that were playaction. In the Pass% column to shows the number of Allen passing attempts divided by total plays minus Allen rushing Attempts. I looked at it this way because we know most of Allen rushing attempts actually come from passing attempts. I only wanted to see how often a RB was getting the ball vs Allen throwing. In theory the less we throw and the more we run with HB's, the more impactful PA should be, the higher the PA% should be.  

 

 

 

We are running substantially more with traditional run plays in 2024 off a 2023 career low for Josh but throwing nearly half the amount of playaction passes as a % of total pass attempts, also a career low.

 

It's like taking away John Daily's driver.

 

Just next level dumb. What the hell is Brady doing right now?

Do you have the rates of coverage vs us and everybody else? It seems like a lot of video was out this week on teams not playing Cover 2 vs us because we can't threaten over the top.

Good data but not sure you can conclude that much from it.....QB rating is a measure but it is not necessarily true a better rating is better play.  It would be interesting to see his rushing and scrambling stats under center vs shotgun

If you watch that first game against the Cardinals Josh was using both play-action and lots of motion. Most of the passes were short, quick strikes along with the run game. Thus giving the Cards no chance to rush the passer effectively. 

 

Now, I gotta wonder what the heck happened to that play-caller because while the run game was working against the Texans, that short, quick-strike passing game went out the proverbial window. Sugar-high Josh took over the first few series of that Texans game and overthrew his receivers badly.

 

It looked like two completely different teams on offense in the last two games vs the first three.

I have another question to piggy back off of yours . How come Brady isn't utilizing all of the talent he has on the offense ? 

 

In the first few games he had up to 10 different players getting the ball but the last few games the opposition took some of the most targeted players away like Shakir, Kinkaid, Cook, all the while he had Knox, Johnson, Gilliam, plus Q. Morris has always had great hands and has produced when needed .

 

Then if you take into it that Hollins has quite a few drops let Shavers show what he has in a game because they sure can't find out if he's sitting the bench like some players of the past that the Bills have lost . 

 

But changing up players along with play action could be a good thing to keep other teams on their heels . Just a thought .

Be nice if Brady could incorporate some of the schemes from the Ravens Commanders game. Lots of short quick throws on the run…not laterally just quick dump offs and such that require QB accuracy so the player doesn’t have to stop and catch it.
