There was a legend around here that Walt Disney chose Orlando because it was the least likely area of Florida to get hit with Hurricanes......that theory held up for a long time, but I think we can put that legend to rest at this point. I know some don't believe in it, but I can assure you that Climate Change is a key driver of the uptick in Hurricane activity in my area...I've been seriously considering moving, but anywhere you go will have their own unique severe weather to deal with......I guess we go with the Devil we know!! There is a new thing called “half backs” whereas people who moved from the North to Florida and now moving farther north or “half way back” to places like the Carolinas to avoid the extreme weather and the majority of Hurricanes. The gulf, with mid-gulf temps reaching 84 now , and the Bahamas with temps getting above 90 will be regular tropical storm accelerators every year from here on out. Just look at the shear # of months of red algae off Western Florida and how Seaweed blooms are getting to be above their peak norms even during off seasons in the whole Atlantic Caribbean. Special K
A track shift to the South may save Tampa from the unprecedented storm surge into Tampa Bay, but it is only a small measure of help for the Gulf Coast of SW Florida....people are saying to expect "un-survivable" conditions down there. As for my area, a track shift to the south means less wind, but more rain......maybe a foot of rain. Did not flood my neighborhood with 18.5 inches of rain from Ian, but at this point, who knows. Now it looks like the East Coast of the State from Brevard County north to Jacksonville is going to get beaten up pretty badly as well after the storm crosses the Peninsula and enters the Atlantic. I guess no one will escape this storm without some degree of impacts. Sucks to be a Floridian right now......wish I could pick up my entire house and transport it to Las Vegas for a couple of weeks!!

Take a look at the work of Captains for Clean Water and you’ll see a great explanation of water quality issues in FL. The big sugar industry, over development, and golf courses are some of the main culprits. They are making some huge progress and politics aside, DeSantis and his wife have been big drivers - and the Federlal Government $. The Keys are already seeing some positive impacts - but a long, long way to go. Humans just abuse the cr@p out of the environment.
Big Turk
This may be a little crude, but anyone staying in Tampa should take a permanent marker and write their next of kin and their phone numbers on their forearm so they can let them know to come identify the body. The mayor pretty much said as much. After Helene basically destroyed all the storm surge protections that were in place, Tampa Bay is going to get decimated. Are the stadiums in danger of getting destroyed as well? I'm not sure where they are located in the city.
BuffaloBillsGospel2014
To all of you I'm sending good vibes, may you all be safe and your houses untouched by damage!!! For as much as I complain about the cold of the Buffalo area at least I don't have to deal with hurricanes or venomous bugs/reptiles. DrPJax
18 hours ago, C.Biscuit97 said: I heard insurance is a joke too. All the best to everyone in those areas. My insurance premiums doubled as my company who insured me for years with no claims , dropped me and left the state. So I was paying 6 k a year and it went to over 12 k a year and even state sponsored plans are reportedly insolvent with no guarantee of paying for damage. They also require roof inspection and agreeing to replace any roof over ten years old. It became prohibitive for me as I became partially disabled after failed cervical surgery for 5 herniated discs and had to retire from my usual clinical work. I am 67 , on social security now , and forking out 12 k a year for something you hope to never use has just been out of reach. I have no mortgage , few bills , but the insurance prices had been so bad , many who moved to Florida had to turn around and resell the property as they can’t afford to get insurance. It’s terrible and there has been no relief with government help. I hopefully am not in huge danger as I live in ponte vedra just south of Jacksonville but no part of Florida is fully safe with this storm. I did get wind damage from Helene and This storm is the worst I have seen as it’s supposed to cross the whole state into the Atlantic as a cat 2; even Disney is closed thru Thursday, and cape Canaveral .where space x launches from , is in the direct path as well and cruises leaving from port canaveral are beung cancelled or changed. its a bad time in Florida now and any prayers are appreciated. Many people will lose everything because they can’t afford insurance. I know we will have power outages and storm surge ( i live in zone b and over half of my county south of St. Augustine is under mandatory evacuation. ) and my ISP has stated we will have outages. Lived here since moving from Ohio in 1985 , and this is the most concern for widespread damage I have experienced since moving here. To make it worse , I have been ill with some abdominal issues , so I can’t travel right now. During the bills loss to the ravens , I got an emergency call from my sister in Ohio telling me my 98 year old mom had passed away unexpectedly while in rehab for a head laceration after falling. She couldn’t go straight back to home because she had so much bleeding , her bedroom carpet had to be removed and it was taking time to clean it out and replace it. She was supposed to make it back home where she was still living independently. Something went wrong and we didn’t get her back to her own home like we promised. My father had passed in 2002 and I made many friends on here talking about him ( like 89 and cablelady) and even tho mom was 98 , it was a shock and still a very terrible, unexpected loss. Her funeral / burial took place Thursday before the Texans game. She was a great friend , buckeye and Bills fan, and I convinced her and my father to be Bills fans as we attended SB 28 in Atlanta together , cuz I knew we couldn’t lose 4 in a row. 😏🥹. So we never got to experience that BILLS SB WIN before she passed. Even at my age of 67 , it still is a huge loss of a great part of my life , and it feels much different now with both parents gone. I can’t call and talk about our crazy Bills losses with her anymore. You never can replace your parents as they are your only source of unconditional love , so enjoy every moment and Bills games with them while possible. Sorry , I didn’t intend this to be a lamp , but with this massive hurricane coming , life can change forever in a day and I’m a little emotional still. So with all that going on , hurricane Helene came , and now Milton is bearing down on Florida as its wind field has already doubled as it heads to the state. Our part , Jacksonville area , is expected to get heavy rain , wind gusts and some storm surge as the St. John’s river will be inundated and flood. But my prayers are for those on the west coast and central part of the state. This strength of storm could change parts of Florida forever. It’s been such a stressful time , yet the next 24-48 hours are.beginning to already cause issues with traffic jams , long gas lines, people saying goodbye to their homes possibly for the last time , and the rain bands are starting to hit. Imagine trying to move family , kids , pets , all with just a couple of days notice. The roads are jammed as you can see on YouTube , as people are fleeing. So please keep Floridians in mind as fellow BILLS fans and friends, and later if you can help with things like the Red Cross etc, please think about it as fema has been little support and you have all rallied for causes in the past. Many will need help and IF you can all give a little support it will be a huge help. It is a lot of stress as I know there will be lots of damage from a probable historic storm. Stay safe getting out of evacuation zones and we can pray for this storm to lessen and keep the loss of life down. Here’s hoping we will all be around watching the BIlls get back to being right and beat the unstable, unlikeable , crazy jets. ! Go Bills ! 😊✌️. And mom, I really miss you. 1 2 1

Augie
We lived in Sarasota for almost 20 years. If you include Hilton Head Island prior to that, we lived in hurricane territory for 30+ years. Sarasota already this year has had not one but TWO storms with FAR more damage than anything we ever experienced. Places that never flooded were under water. Young mothers with infants being rescued from their homes in boats. Waves crashing thru houses. I looked this morning and saw that the track has moved south from Tampa, putting a bullseye on Sarasota yet again. We still have friends and family in the area, and we had considered moving back one day after the wife retires. I am most concerned about the well being of our friends, but I’m also curious to see how this affects the real estate market. I don’t mean that in a heartless way at all, it’s just that the area has had an incredible surge in prices. People have been buying and investing in real estate there for a few years, forgetting that this is part of what they are buying into. It literally comes with the territory, but a few light storm years and people forget. . Edited October 9 by Augie 1
