I know we all talk about how these coaches know much more football than us. But for the life of me, I cannot figure out how we cannot figure out 12 personnel. Especially now, with more teams staying in Cover 2 shells.

It blows my mind.

Brandon Beane must be SCREAMING every Sunday that he spent a first round pick on a TE, and paid another TE like top 7 money, and we CANNOT get a staff who can figure out how to use them both effectively.

Allen doesn’t like throwing in traffic over the middle. Doesn’t like tight windows. He’s fine chucking it up deep or long along the sidelines.

So I don’t for the life of me understand the 12 personnel if we can NOT attack the middle of the field in the passing game. This has been glaring to me for 3 years

Just because he paid someone top 7 money doesn't mean they are worth top 7 money.

Hes been a great soilder for the team.   Very good blocker and probably could have just continued being our #1 tight end.  His best seasons are exactly what Kincaid gives us now.  Which makes me think it has more to do with how Josh targets tight ends than it does their ability.

His contract wouldn't look so bad if they didn't also use a high pick on his clone.

Cole Beasley was an All-Pro slot with Allen. He didn't play outside or deep.

Yea they had their time feasting on zone D. covid year was last great season together.

kc / man to man shut it down in playoffs tho.

the last 2-3 year the passing charts are lacking for Allen in center of field

He lives in his car, so it's home ownership and car ownership.

I like Knox, but just once it would be really fun to invest in a skill position player and actually get the value back on.

This.

I don’t know if the coaching staff and Beane aren’t on the same page or if it’s because we have a revolving door at OC ( I’ve said it a bunch, THIS is why you have to have an offensive HC when you have a HOF QB), but there has been two times where Beane has gotten an offensive player that the staff has used.  Diggs was obviously used and used pretty well and Beasley was good too.

Look back at everyone else signed or re-signed to decent size deals and it’s like the coach has never spoken to the GM.  Knox? Sure we’ll make him a blocker.  All the vet RBs, they can keep the bench warm for us.  1st round pick on a pass catching TE, no thanks.  2nd round (first pick for the team) on a WR, ehh we’ll get him 3 targets a game.  McKenzie, just no.  Samuel? Bet he can hand the ball back to Josh and no one will see that coming! Oh wait.  They even drafted Cook and made him useless for a year until there really was nobody else to run so they had to and wouldn’t ya know, Beane didn’t do a bad job on that.

I don’t get it.  Even if you look at the D side, Elam is an obvious sore spot, they signed all these DL to big deals only to rotate them with Vet min guys like it doesn’t matter who’s in the field.  Thankfully, Von came in and said something to the effect of “it’s hard to get going when you’re only on the field half the time.”  That seemed to wake McClappy up a bit.  I can’t count the number of times we had 2nd and third stringers in on the DL in the Redzone early on in McDs tenure because “it’s their turn”.   Drove me insane.

I think McD is one of the better DB coaches maybe ever, as a D coordinator he’s darn good and I’d even say as a leader he’s solid.  All that said, I still don’t see him as a great HC, too many blind spots, too little situational awareness/adjustments and way too much finger pointing (at coordinators) when it goes wrong.

Kincaid hasn't yet shown he's better than Knox and that's not necessarily a knock on him. Knox has had some maddening drops but he's also made some incredible catches for a tight end. The coaches just don't know how to use these guys in the passing game.

I don’t think that’s the case at all.  He’s made plenty of tight window throws over the middle.  I think the ball got forced outside to Diggs and a lot of the roll outs went/go outside as that’s where they should go.   The Ravens even said flatly, ”I don’t care how much they throw deep, etc.., we can’t let them win in the center of the field”. This entire scheme is predicated on working the middle.  There’s so little threat outside, my exact fears blew up in our faces when the Ravens shut down the short middle and dared them to go outside/long bc there was nothing happening out there.

As a blocker, no. As a receiver, Kincaid has an ability to set up defenders and get open that Knox doesn’t have. I think he’s going to need outside threats to open up the middle of the field for him to shine though. Also we will need a TE that can play in line unless his blocking continues to improve.

The biggest issue this team has is the construction of its receiving corps. A trade for a WR that can threaten on the outside would be huge. If we can’t do that then the MOF will stay congested and we will have to rely on Allen to buy time and play superman.

Somebody step up and have a big game... But Knox or Samuel would be refreshing if only to show a pulse on some other weapon that might help us.

The last 2-3 years, they haven't done a good job taking advantage of the middle of the field.

They still don't, with Shakir/Kincaid who should be effective in that area.

You can't blame Allen, when he took advantage of the middle to great effect with Cole Beasley for 2 years.

I don’t see why not. Kincaid’s numbers are very pedestrian. I’m not sure he is any better than Dawson Knox and I’m beginning to think it was not a wise use of a first round draft pick taking him,

Don't look at numbers -- Kincaid is far more talented than Knox, and it's obvious on the field. Knox isn't a poor talent either. It's just that Kincaid has elite skills. It's not his fault he's seeing many passes right now, but I expect that to change. "Everybody eats" sounds nice, but that'll only get you so far in the NFL and you need to prioritize your best receiving threats.

I meant in terms of receiving production from a #1 tight end.   Granted Knox never had the number of targets Kincaid had in his first season.

Kincaid has much better hands, Knox is a better blocker, but they are both 6'4 250-pound athletic tight ends.

Same size I will give you that but way different set of hands, way different.  Knox would have gotten the touches if he proved he wouldn't drop the damn ball!!!
