Yes the roster having 10 active defensive lineman played huge dividends this week- such a solid move-

We play nickel or dime but need 10 d lineman - I'm just gonna stick to my roster in Madden

Next time we play the Ravens, I’ll love to see what adjustments are made. Hopefully it’ll be to have 5 down lineman:

Groot - Carter - Jones - Oliver - Epenesa

Daquan Jones has been bad

This is not even remotely true, imo.

Jones has 3 tackles, and has been totally invisible. His PFF ratings have been in the gutter. He had huge impacts the first 3 games last year. So far he's been a stiff. Period.

Would love to see that- not really our style but that team brought running back for sure- as Joe Marino stated-;they have 2 unicorns back there running the ball

JJust have to do something different if a rematch happens

In what world would a Seany led team ever run an alternate defense?  They are who they are until the head coach is let go (~10 years from now) - a base 4-2-5 defense.

The Bills invite the run by scheme.  The game vs the Ravens is skewing the data big time.  Listen to the Joe Marino all 22 review yesterday.....scheme was a big problem with light boxes and personnel.  Not saying D Jones is perfect but I think the evidence shows it is not his problem.

Then it’s a coaching problem because you don’t invite the run against D Henry and J Hill. If you force Lamar to beat you thru the air you usually win.

For that game vs the Ravens I think the whole world agrees including Babich....it was not the right gameplan.

That is true. When I see our nickel defense on the goal line when the offense is in heavy personnel… no words. I’ve been vocal about how I don’t believe Belichick is the greatest coach of all time, BUT he would do unorthodox things on defense that were opponent specific. It wasn’t ever “this is what we run and this is who we are.” Even Rex Ryan for all his worts would switch up how he played opponents.

I don’t understand how a defensive coach doesn’t specifically key on the one thing you have to take away going into the game. Before Dallas, Henry looked old and slow. Thanks to the light boxes he’s faced the past couple games, he’s the talk of the NFL. Hopefully Babich has the freedom to get out of our base 4-2-5 alignment when it warrants it. I want to see innovation on that side of the ball, opponent specific game plans.

It was getting out of nickel alignment that was part of our problem on Sunday.

Most likely because it’s our typical bread and butter and not much else is ran from outside that alignment. Looking at the stills from the game where Ravens were in heavy personnel and we were in the 4-2-5 inviting them to run into a light box, it’s not hard to understand why they ran for 270 yards. The wham block on Oliver in particular is the same rushing attack Jonathan Taylor gashed us on the last time we were blown out. Nicholas Morrow wasn’t the answer, but perhaps 5 DL - with Cam Lewis the one rotating out - could’ve been. Before this game there were rumblings the Ravens were too predictable, that 88% of the time Henry was in the game it was a rush attempt between him or Lamar. We did nothing to counter that.

That game was a bit of a learning experience for Babich.  This was going to happen at some point.  Both he and Brady were schooled against the Ravens. I am sure they will from it and move on.  When they meet again, it will be different.

Yea I think the five DL front would have been an interesting look but it is something you generally use against outside zone. In the end the Ravens did more outside zone that you'd typically expect but I suspect that is why the Bills didn't have it in the plan. They had some 43 in there clearly which is what you'd usually go to against a up the gut type rushing attack which is what they were likely expecting more of from them, the problem is they don't have the personnel to win playing a 43 when they are down their normal entire second level. I think if we'd spent the whole game in the 43 we ran on drives 2 and 3 we might have held them to only 70 or 80 yards after that first big run.... but we'd have given up 200 yards in running back pass game. Justice Hill had a career high 78 receiving yards. I'm willing to listen to the five man DL look but just switching up to something you rarely do and likely rarely practice mid game would likely have failed. Do I think the Bills got outcoached, yes, obviously. But I think you sometimes just have to hold your hands up and say the opposition had a fantastic plan, executed brilliantly and had the superior talent and when all three are true you are going to struggle.

Couldn’t agree more in regards to NOT running a 4-3. Both starting linebackers are injured, so at that point you’re talking 3 backups on the field, one of which would be a 3rd stringer given that nickel is our base. I still maintain that you also cannot go into the game against a power rushing attack and expect to get the job done with 6 players in the box. It’s just not going to work. Your options are to stay in the nickel and bring Rapp down as a linebacker, or bring an extra DL in the game and go with a 5-2-4 look. The Bills seemingly were surprised they were getting gashed and went to the seldomly used 4-3 as a result. Just seemed like they didn’t have a solid plan to stop this particular offense.

Von suspension- no corresponding move needed until after 4 games.  Well played Beane

I think I heard someone say we run the 4-2-5 about 72% of the time either last year or this year so far.   Most NFL teams last season used the nickel as their base.  It's not unique to McD.

Nor does McD employ it exclusively.  We saw 4-3 for example for a drive or two against the Ravens.  Neither the Bills nor any other team use it on every play.
