Another Fan Posted September 30 Posted September 30 When I was still interested in basketball he was a definite staple of that 90s era. The 1994 Denver series against Seattle with him celebrating lying on the court after Game 5 is an iconic basketball image of that era to me. The 8 seed knocking off the 1 seed. But I recall he played a little bit for all the local teams here at some point: Knicks, Nets, and Sixers. Was a great rebounder and shot blocker from I recall. And a huge muscular dude https://www.cbsnews.com/news/dikembe-mutombo-dies-nba-hall-of-famer-brain-cancer-age-58/ 3 Quote
Royale with Cheese Posted September 30 Posted September 30 Damn, he used to go to my church 10+ years ago. I never met him but would see him. RIP 1 Quote

Augie Posted September 30 Posted September 30 I heard about this first from my wife. She’s done some things with him professionally in the past, and she sent pictures of herself with him, and it’s ridiculous looking with her at 5’4” and him……way up there. What a great guy who used his platform to make the world a better place. RIP 1 1 Quote
Ned Flanders Posted September 30 Posted September 30 Saw him once in Atlanta about 25 years ago being interviewed in a sports bar...while sitting, his knees came up to his shoulders. A massive human being. Quote
US Egg Posted September 30 Posted September 30 Saw an interview with a woman who was in the service business and had some known clients. She referred to Mutombo as the "King" Whatever that means. Quote
Augie Posted September 30 Posted September 30 Here he is with my wife not too long ago. I think it was shortly before he was diagnosed. He used his platform to help others. That’s a beautiful legacy. “What is the Dikembe Mutombo Foundation? NBA Legend Dikembe Mutombo is the President and CEO of the Dikembe Mutombo Foundation, which he created in 1997. Located in Atlanta, Georgia, the foundation's mission is to improve the health, education and quality of life for the people in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.” RIP That was one giant of a man! 4 Quote

He was a joy to watch, and he did some even more incredible things off the court. It's crazy to me because I feel like it's too early to be losing our childhood heroes but then I remember how the 90s were over 30 years ago now RIP Dikembe ☝️ Edited September 30 by BillsPride12 1 Quote

thenorthremembers Posted October 2 Posted October 2 One of my favorite Dad memories was watching my daughter block a shot in 4th Grade basketball and give the other kid the Mutombo. Always seemed like a good hearted giant. RIP big fella. Quote
K-9 Posted October 2 Posted October 2 This news hit me hard. In another life long ago, the company I worked for also owned the Denver Nuggets and Dikembe would often visit corporate back east for various reasons as well as to see his brother who worked for us. We’d just sit around and shoot the breeze. Whenever I entertained customers in the suite in Denver, he always offered to have them come to the morning shoot arounds and spend a couple minutes. He was the most personable, down to earth person; totally unaffected by his great success. And his was a brilliant mind that could riff on a myriad of subjects. And in several languages to boot. Dikembe was a difference maker in this world and we lost a good man when good men are needed most. Travel well, friend. 2 1 Quote
