Herb Posted September 30 Posted September 30 It seems that nearly every time the experts start talking about us being an elite team, we have an inevitable crashing back down to 🌎. As a head coach, you have to realize very quickly that you have absolutely no answer for the opposing team running the ball and dominating the time of possession. The only answer to this reality is to score quickly whenever you possess the ball. McDermott has largely coached just well enough to sustain his job. We fans have witnessed countless performances in McDermott's tenure that have defied logic in terms of how well your QB performed and how the games ultimately turned out when it really mattered most. This was our first real test of a playoff atmosphere where a team at home needed a win. 35-10 the way we did it says everything to me. Theoretically, if a head coach would design the perfect QB to run a full no-huddle offense, who would that be? 🙄 5 3 2 1 2 2 6 Quote
Beast Posted September 30 Posted September 30 It’s a passing league. The Bills are designed to stop the pass. A team that runs the ball freakishly well got ‘em last night. The Bills had a night where things snowballed on them and they didn’t recover.  The answer is to just score. It doesn’t matter whether it’s with a huddle or without one. Would a hurry up offense have stopped the Ravens from having their way with the Bills o-line? Doubtful and it may have even got worse. 6 11 2 Quote

It very well could have gotten worse, but it would have been a lot more entertaining if we had sped up the game as soon as we knew we couldn't stop the run. 1 Quote

78thealltimegreat Posted September 30 Posted September 30 If Josh doesnt make a Josh throw they score 3 points. They had guys running free at Josh all night. The Ravens kept crowding the line and bringing guys free to get it out of Josh’s hands fast. The way you counter that is with draws and screens. The Bills ran none of these.  The other side of the ball was an utter disaster As McDermott had no answers for the Ravens running game. Having no LB depth and not even attempting to turn Lamar into a passer was disgusting.  Coaching played a part but we have holes on this roster and everything came to a head tonight. 7 1 1 Quote

I'd be more concerned if we only squeaked by the Fins and Jags. The optimist in me tells me this game was the perfect storm of desperation by the Ravens, a poorly prepared Bills team feeling themselves playing at half speed on a short week, a defense exploited in the middle that desperately needs T. Johnson and Bernard back, and Josh Allen still developing chemistry with his new WR's (I hate we didn't do more to address the position this off-season). We'll see what this team is made of the next two weeks. 1 3 Quote

colin Posted September 30 Posted September 30 It really is coaching.  We are built small, so a bully like Baltimore is gonna beat us more often than not.  Our coaches really make sure we cant win by being just so easy to read.  If the bills don't dial up the right exact call on d (playing rock paper scissors) then schematically what will beat us is just too obvious. Misdirection, power runs, and anything that finds the hole in the zone is always gonna be there. On top of that our zero talent middle of the d is very welcoming of big runs and yards after catching.  On the other side, our wrs don't match up, so they need longer to get sched open vs talented and physical ds, and our oline (and QB, josh is pretty awful at reading where the pressure is coming from pre snap vs aggressive ds) just simply cannot pick up blitzes or handle stunts.  This game looked just like the cinci playoff game. They knew what they were gonna do, back up linemen on o were just gonna blast forward and they used quick misdirection to bait the dl up the field and have our tiny back 7 get out of position early and it was a wrap.  The whole MO of a mcd team is to have the d frustrate the opponent who will then make mistakes and just give the o enough possessions for super josh to invent points out of thin air on broken plays. He's so bull headed that he can't dial up a different way to slow down and opponent. It works great vs crappy qbs and coaches, but as soon as a team has some ability to scheme (coaches and players alike) he has no answers.  If we didn't allow the big run to start the game and had better execution on O then this loss would have looked like our KC playoffs loss last year -- we get steamrolled constantly and Josh has enough magic to make it interesting leading to the awful play of our kicker losing the game instead of just being sad.  We are a poor man's version of the packers of the 2010s -- HOF QB who can do it all and an unconfident team built to dominate bad teams but simply cannot deliver vs a talented and well coached opponent.   4 2 2 4 Quote
SirAndrew Posted September 30 Posted September 30 I knew it was going to be a long night when McD punted on fourth and two from the fifty during the first possession. I understand it’s risky, but it showed we were prepared to coach conservatively against this opponent. 2 7 3 Quote

Coaching + philosophy =early playoff exits.  Good enough to get you there against weaker opponents.  Not good enough to sustain when it really matters. 2 3 Quote
