Yep we were always a bad matchup for the Ravens because we never come out of nickel and that's exactly what the Ravens want to see. Would have been nice to see a defensive game plan that actually catered to our opponent instead of the same exact crap that got us blown out the last time we faced a team with the same identity.

No doubt the Bills lack a Steve Spagnola mind to run a competent gameplan. Clearly the first thing with the Ravens is not being bulldozed out the stadium. McDermott’s insistence on not getting beat over the top meant the Ravens would simply road grade through our 6 man front on play 1. After that continued soft shell defense and the yards piled up to the tune of 260 yards given up the ground. A pathetic showing from a prideful franchise on a national stage.

Exactly. The Ravens were never going to beat us through the air. Everyone knew it, including the Ravens. So they did the opposite.

A completely predictable and preventable game plan.

We just didn't prepare for the most obvious thing, and that was apparent from the very first play they ran. The Bills' coaching staff is too proud of their system to predict an 80-yard TD run even though everyone else knew it was coming.

Football is all about taking away the other teams best weapons. Spagnola architect of the 2007 and 2011 Giants Super Bowl winning defenses that stopped Tom Brady knows how to take away the other teams best player and to make an offense one-dimensional. Week 1 he shut down Henry 13 carries 46 yards. Babich & McDermott should study Spagnola

Yep McDermott is very proud of his system that can shut down most passing schemes. He's even shut down Henry before. But when his scheme isn't catered to his opponent or they start doing something different than he expected, he has almost no ability to adapt.

I don’t think the coaches had the team prepared to play for this game.  I had suggested that they should forego the nickel package and start a 3rd LB.   It wouldn’t have mattered on that Henry 1st play TD.  They didn’t contain, the Ravens blocked it well and the Bills had nobody that was fast enough to catch Henry.

After that, it seemed every play the Ravens ran, they got 5 yards before contact.  Then when the Bills got the ball and the Ravens defenders were on them immediately.  Best O-line in the league, my arse.

The Bills defense came out in the 2nd half more aggressive but it was short lived.

I agree that the play discussed in this thread probably changed the momentum of the game, but Josh was running for his life the whole game.

I’m usually a defender of Josh but I think some of the Brady blame belongs on him there…could easily throw that ball away and just take on the 3rd and 7.  He made that bad playcalling decision exponentially worse

I think he wanted it to work because they're pry practiced it repeatedly since training camp.  I've got to see the All 22 but I don't think he saw Van Noy.  If he throws a TD to Coleman there then Brady's a genius.  Having said that, it was just the wrong time to run the play against the wrong team.

I've seen this defense get gashed early many times over the years and then McD quickly adapting shutting the opponent down for most of the rest of the game.  The Cardinals game comes to mind.  I don't think it was scheme as much tonight as it was personnel with them attacking what should be backups in Spector, Williams, and Lewis.

Brady has been pretty good, but that play call almost erased everything good he’s done.  If Allen gets hurt on that play, you just bought yourself a pink slip.  I still can’t believe how dumb that play was.  Travis Henry halfback pass bad.

...and against the Ravens, Brady was unmasked. How long did it take him to attempt to adjust to the Ravens really crowding the short routes? Then when he did, our On-line failed to give Allen the protection necessary. Bad performance all around by the coaches, players, etc.

Do they have the personnel to do that?  I think the dl needed to be more effective. The numbers at lb are down.  This defense is small it always has been and is their weakness.

At the moment in the game, the oline was actually starting to get some decent traction. We had all the moment, and completely blew it with that idiotic call.

It was also the moment that any fight the bills had left in them was lost.  Also punting on 4th and 2 stuck by a lot was chicken sh**.

I like the idea of drawing the front 7 defenders over, along with some backs, i think i even saw a beer vendor in there, some Baltimore orioles, Edgar Allen poe, with damar chasing from behind and losing ground....

then handing the ball off to your franchise in an awkward spot, nowhere to run, with no protection.  Great plan.

It's like a 10 year old kid drew it up

Given the offensive line was struggling in pass protection, it was not a good call.  This was one of the worst games I've seen under McDermott, and he's laid a bunch of eggs.  They were completely outclassed by the guys on the other side of the field.  The Ravens watched film on the Bills and they had Brady's number.

I'm not sure whether we should be worried, or whether we just matched up poorly with the Ravens tonight.  But, I do know the Ravens will be in the playoffs so we need to be able to keep up with them, which we didn't do at all tonight.

Let's hope some of our starters on defense get healthy.  We need them badly.

Actually Murdock, McD led teams have not been beaten by more than 6 points in 42 games, when if memory serves was against the Colts.  With that said, it was a horrendous loss, and almost no redeemable aspects other than Allen played as well as one could given how poor the line played.

I just as repulsed as the next poster, but we almost always come back from a bad loos with success.  We’ll see what happens in Houston.  We certainly need to get the bad taste out of our mouth.

The problem with the play design is that there was no misdirection.  As soon as the “QB” sprints out wide to Allen’s side the whole play was flowing that way so anyone pursing would know if it looks like a lateral you are absolutely teeing off on Allen.  We are insanely lucky that he wasn’t killed.

I watched the replay of that disaster again this morning and it's obvious that the whole play was flowing towards that whole side of the field.......disgusting that we even tried it in the first place.

100%, This is just over-reaction to a loss.  In the end the only thing that really matters is what happens or does not happen in the playoffs.   At this point, this team could win all their games, but if they lose in the playoffs it will be the same as the last 4 years.

For those wondering if anyone was open. No, not even close.

What is lost in all of the chatter about the trick play is the Dawkins completely missed his block. Like most of you, I thought why bring the Defense to the side of Allen?  But when you look at it again, and again, I'm not sure that was the play AT ALL! Dawkins whiff forces a bad lateral by Samuel that makes Josh go back to his left. I believe the design was for Josh to keep going to keep rolling out to his right.

Yeah that's what I saw as well. Dawkins got cooked and it blew up the whole play. Not giving Brady any excuses though. The blocking scheme on that play was terrible. Whoever was lined up to the left of Dawkins pulled to the right side and basically rubbed Dawkins out of position to block the edge.

So, yes, it was a ridiculous play call....but....it was HORRIBLE execution by a whole bunch of players. Football is like an organized dance. On that play we dropped our partner on her head! Sheeeesh!

I understand this was an over reaction... but I said this immediately after that play.... Brady should be fired... escorted from the press box and made to walk home for that idiodic play call especially when you were taking back momentum... you didnt need to take that risk with a low percentage play with tremendous downside...

also, anyone calling a play again where Samuel gets the ball behind the line of scrimmage again should get a lifetime ban from being within 500 feet of an NFL stadium....

In retrospect... with a calmer head... I would change it too... If you ever do that again Joe you are fired... and anyone calling a play where Samuel gets the ball behind the line of scrimmage should get a lifetime ban .... you get the point LOL
