A few inches short in terms of height but think he's got a lot to offer. Good value pick where we got him and if he does become Justin Houston like his draft profile compares him to then we got us a steal.

I compared him to Elvis Dumervil, another shorter guy with length and wingspan:

"His measurables are very similar to Elvis Dumervil, the Louisville product who was drafted in the 4th round and had a borderline HOF career:

105.5 Career Sacks

23 forced fumbles

2× First-team All-Pro (2009, 2014)

5× Pro Bowl (2009, 2011, 2012, 2014, 2015)

NFL sacks leader (2009)

Player                        Height             Weight               Arm Length       Wingspan           40 Yard           10 Yard Split

Elvis Dumervil         5'11.375              257                      32.625"              76"                    4.75                     1.65

Javon Solomon       6'                        246                     33.875"               80.250"            4.72                    1.65

If you’re going to talk about Solomon(who think is going to be a very good pass rusher) than you have to talk about Toohill as well.

Everyone was surprised Toohill made the roster, myself included, and he has been nothing but great as the # 5 DE on the roster. Not just his sack and FR from last week but his ability to set the edge in the run game has been very impressive to me so far.

I was not surprised Toohill made the team. I expected him to:

"As you suggest they do have a lot in common. Both Murphy and Toohill played at Stanford and both spent the bulk of their careers (4 seasons each) with the Washington Football Team.

Physically they're also very comparable with Toohill having generally better measurables:

Murphy 6'6" 260 lbs  33 7/8" arms  forty: 4.86  10 yd split: 1.65  bench press: 19 reps  vertical: 35.5" broad jump: 9'10"

Toohill   6'5" 255 lbs  33 1/2" arms  forty: 4.62  10 yd split: 1.59  bench press: 17 reps  vertical: 39"    broad jump: 10'6"

Murphy was a more highly-rated recruit and had a more decorated college career and was drafted in the 2nd round.

Toohill was drafted in the 7th round.

In 86 career games (57 starts) Murphy had 26 career sacks.

In 57 career games (14 starts) Toohill has 7 sacks including 5 in 8 starts last year.

I'm thinking Beane's gonna get much greater value with Toohill than he did with Murphy."

I mean he is 5th or 6th in the DE rotation and he was injured.  He seems to have some good skills and he made a good play on that sack Monday.  I think longer term I dont expect him to get a lot of snaps unless injuries occur.   Playing mop up can be just as misleading as preseason...I am optimistic/curious long term but not sure the fanbase is missing anything yet.

As soon as I heard that this guy was one of the all time sack leaders at Troy (ahead of Demarcus Ware and Osi Umenyiora) and learned about his wingspan, I thought "forget the 'undersized' label", this kid is a steal and he's gonna be a legitimate pass rusher in the NFL."

Lo and behold -- and with the obvious caveat that it's early yet -- that appears to be the case.

Below are the career sack leaders at Troy. Note Soloman's name in all three categories.

He looked good. If he turns out to be what we hope, this D line -- which is already pretty good at getting after the QB -- will be phenomenal.

And they may have found their replacement for Von after this season !!

The things that stood out to me about Soloman on draft day were:

1.) He may be shorter than you'd like, but he's 246 lbs. He's thick and stoutly built. He also has a massive wingspan for his height. It's not like he's light in the britches out there.

2.) He is not the type of EDGE the Bills usually draft. He has more dip and bend and pure pass rush to him than the types they typically go for, which is a great thing, because with Rousseau, Smoot, and Toohill in toe, they already have plenty of edge setting and run stopping. They NEEDED an athletic pure pass rush type.

I hope he follows Von Miller around and soaks up every piece of information and wisdom he can.

I've been excited about Javon since he was drafted and was disappointed that he missed the first two weeks due to injury. Subsequently I was excited to hear he was active for Jacksonville and he showed very well.

Javon, Andreesen, Elam, Morrow and Bishop entered the game with 7:45 remaining and on his 3rd NFL play from scrimmage he strip sacked McCorkle for a fumble the Bills recovered.

He ended up playing 14 snaps of which 10 were passing plays. PFF gave him a 93.1 pass rush grade and a 93.3 overall grade.

I can't wait to see him sack Lamar on Sunday night.

He looks like the real deal.  I’m excited to see him again this week.  I loved the pick and been excited about him all offseason after he kept popping in camp.  Be interesting to see how they use him with the everyone playing so well.

He was like a wrecking ball. We are kind of finally seeing McDermott's vision of drafting all these defensive linemen and sending fresh bodies at these quarterbacks over and over again. It's relentless.

The problem was never the philosophy. Almost all the top teams do it. It was the talent identification.

still a puzzle how he lasted until the 5th round.  Guy is a gamer.  The DL is rounding into form.

Size and level of competition. But I agree his talent should have been gone at least a round earlier even with those questions.

There was a picture of him and Von with Von hugging him after sack

In best Mafia voice he whispers to him "Great job kid but do not think you can replace me."

I see him more as a shorter Jason Taylor.

Kid has promise no doubt.

The selection of Solomon indicates that McBeane are evolving in their processes. They've been pretty consistent about drafting for certain traits, including height and length on the edges. Taking Solomon was a departure from that tendency.

Yes, it was McCorkle. I'll correct. Thanks.

Yes Daequan Hardy and he's on the practice squad. The 2024 draft is certainly looking excellent so far. Of course 2022 was his masterpiece with Elam, Cook, Bernard, Shakir, Benford, and Spector... and Araiza.

and hardy looked great but then i believe he got injured and ended up odd man out.

Woooooooow. I forgot Andreesson was 44 and was like wow Matakevich looked solid when watching the game 🤦. Realized watching the video that Matakevich is back with the Steelers. I feel dumb lmao.

In one game Matakevich got most tackles on team.  Give  Joe Andreessen some time and he will match that.

Yep. Yet another hat tip to Beane’s scouting group.
Did we cut any picks this year? We had 10..

Chandman, you and I are thinking alike.  Beane is a master at finding depth on the roster.  Just thinking of guys like Benford, a 6th round pick, Milano, a 5th round pick, and so on.
