It wasn't 50/50 though... when bishop hits the ground he's got 2 hands on the ball, and elam has one - isn't that more like 33% possession?

Also the ball hitting the ground can't help you catch it is my understanding.  And if that ball doesn't hit the ground, worthy doesn't catch it.

Missed PI on Douglas would have made this moot...

Could've been 4 points off the board too though.

That’s true. But taking more time off the clock might have cost us 4pts as well. I guess all in all it kinda worked out to not a big deal because Allen made that amazing throw to Hollins. That was a heck of a catch as well.

Our QB having the ball in his hands with 3 minutes left down 3 is a situation I would take 10/10 playing any opponent anywhere. We should have the players to support that.

Our defense on the field facing Lamar/Burrow/Mahomes with the ball in their hands up 3 with 3 minutes left is a situation I would not take 10/10 times.

The reason we lost is because on the biggest play of the game, Josh Allen made a heroic throw that hit a receiving option in his hands, and was incomplete:

That’s why we need to upgrade the offense. Because when Josh has the ball with 3 minutes left, we should score.

I didnt say I want our defense on the field for the final drive...I said if our defense could get some stops throughout the game then we would be in control of the game instead of relying on a hero ball from our QB to a TE with bad knees.

And no, the reason we lost was because the refs stole a possession from us (twice within 2 plays) when we had the lead and were already approaching FG range up 1 with a chance to go up 2 scores.  Then our defense responded by letting KC drive the field and get a 2 pt conversion to put us instead down 7 midway in the 4th.

The 2 highest scoring offenses in NFL history got shut down in Super Bowl losses to teams with mediocre conservative offenses.  The 3rd and 4th highest scoring teams in NFL history led by Mahomes in 2018 and the Lions this year didnt even make the SB.  Mahomes got smashed in the SB by the Bucs defense in his only SB loss.  Last team to beat him in the playoffs held him to 3 points in the 2nd half which came on the final play or regulation at end of 4th to force OT.

No team in the NFL has scored more points than us the past 5 years.  We have reached the AFCCG just twice and lost 3 divisional games, two at home.  I mean even when Josh Allen gives us the lead late it hasn't mattered.  Josh Allen gave the Bills the lead with 1:54 left in the game...Bills went on to give up 10 points in the final 1:54 of the game and another TD in OT for a total of 42 points...just to see the Bengals hold that same team to 3 points in the 2nd half the week after in the AFCCG.

The only teams who have been beating Mahomes in the playoffs have done so through defense.

The point is that nobody has been able to beat KC with defense in 3 seasons.

It’s very disappointing to be in that situation two years in a row to come up empty.

No, the point is nobody has beaten KC through a better offense in 7 seasons since Brady was in NE in 2018.

Okay so even though the defense wasn’t good enough in 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024, we just need to keep investing in defense and maybe 2025 will be the year? Is that the argument?

Keep investing in defense?  What year do you think is?  2021?  We have used 4 of our last 6 picks in the first 2 rounds on offense and we already used our 3rd this year on Cooper too.  It’s like you guys have been in a cave for 3 years while they kept investing in the offense.  I mean one of those drafts was entirely offense except for one pick.

3 of our last 5 first round picks were spent on offensive weapons for Josh.

Okay so the defense stinks every year vs the Chiefs in the playoffs since 2020 because we haven't invested enough in defense?

Friend asked me this question, and couldn’t think of an example: is there a SB winner that has allowed a playoff opponent their single-game season high in points scored?

cause that’s essentially what we asked Allen to do on Sunday: overcome inept D & ST and overmatched coaches, and lead the team to victory.

101 yrds, TD vs 12 yards.  Not much of a comparison, add on the fact that soo many of us knew this would happen when we traded them the pick.  Just a bone head move by Beane any kind if way you want to spin it

I don't want to take anything away from his performance, but on his TD he was manned up 1v1 against Damar Hamlin. I mean that just can't happen. Massive coaching failure.

Seriously though, do you think more defensive-heavy investments are the answer?

I don’t think we are ever gonna play a half like the Bengals did in the 2021 AFCCG. We could have Garrett and Crosby, and a good CB to pair with Benford. I don’t think we are ever shutting them down like that.

For most of the game last week and when we’ve played KC in the past, we have lived and died with KC’s mistakes and plays that you can’t rely on. Especially because they make less in the postseason.

Think of all the big defensive plays the Bills have ever made over the years vs that team.

Random unforced Mahomes fumble

Random unforced Mahomes overthrow pick

Random tipped pass off the receivers’ hands for a pick six

when they elevate in the postseason, their dudes are OPEN OPEN. And they routinely make the plays that are there to be made.

It would take an entire defensive philosophy shift and a massive infusion of talent to alter that. Neither of which I believe are possible or even likely to happen.

We have done the “multiple All-Pros in the back 7” thing. They still dominated on offense.

If the argument is we need defensive talent better than those 2020-2021 teams, it’s just not gonna happen outside of pure dumb luck. We would need like a two year Seattle run of multiple defensive All Pros found all over the draft.

Not sure to be honest, but the teams that have made it that far in the playoffs without really ever having a high scoring game the way the Chiefs did this season is pretty rare too.

The defense doesn't stink...its a play or two away from being the difference in the games.  We need an impact player that all they need to do is help affect a drive or two and the game goes from a close game to multi score leads.

We just fielded the 16th highest scoring offense of all time...16th all time.  It can't get much better than that...and even when it does, it has not resulted in SB wins for anyone in the top 10 outside the 5th ranked team (2011 Packers) and all the way back in 1983 with the Redskins.  Thats it.

But lets keep doing the same crap over and over again...we arent outscoring them with a hitorical great offense...so maybe just maybe we should try and let them score less.  Not to mention, its the ONLY thing that has gotten Mahomes out of the playoffs in 7 years.

The playoff game vs the Chiefs was the second highest offensive EP of their season. Second only to the Panthers.

stop me if you heard this before. The defense sucks in the biggest moments against the Chiefs…. every season.

2024 teams that held the Chiefs to a lower offensive EP than the Bills in the AFCCG:

Texans x 2

Bucs

Saints

Steelers

Raiders x 2

Falcons

Niners

Broncos x2

Chargers x2

Bengals

Browns

Guess where the 2023 Bills were?

Bottom 5. Again.

Guess where the 2021 Bills were?

Bottom 3. Again.

Guess where the 2020 Bills were?

Worst defensive performance against the Chiefs the ENTIRE SEASON.

So really, what the heck are we talking about? Invest more in defense so we can be more like the 2020-2021 Bills and be terrible like always?
