I agree, but Mayo was a weird hire. The media strangely didn’t criticize it, so people don’t think much of it. The dude had very limited coaching experience. It was just a Bob Kraft Pats dynasty nostalgia hire.

He’s been an incredibly well thought of assistant for at least 3 years now and if he knew he wasn’t gonna be the Pats HC he would likely have been already been competing for other jobs
