At the highest levels, it’s all about execution. The chiefs are a few plays from never having reached the SB vs winning three times. Same with the Bills.

 

yesterday’s game is a perfect example.
 

I think to have that level of execution when the game is on the line you just have to be that talented and clutch and consistent. The chiefs have guys Ike Mahomes and Butker who are. Neither of those guys are going to make a mistake at the end.

A team that wins it all just once gets that forever boost going forward. KC just has that confidence that most teams don't possess because of this. This is what kills me about the Bills never getting over the hump in the 90s. Had they won the first SB, all of the others are different.  The Chiefs elevated themselves and now never doubt themselves. By contrast, every team facing Mahomes in the last 2 minutes, just tightens up and this just increases the chances of a bone headed error like yesterday.

This is a highly underrated factor.  The Patriots had Adam Vinatieri for most of their  dynasty years…  It’s probably the difference in two games a year…

Actually the number of games the Bills win when Allen has a bad day are pretty few and far between.  In fact, I suspect it would be hard to find a game the Bills won, when the other teams QB had a rating 23 points higher than Allen.  To be fair, that may also be a unique factor from Mahomes game yesterday.   I am aware in any game the Bills lose where the turnover differential was against them, that is generally the first thing the coaches point too.

The KC players for the most part are always making a play on the ball, they aren’t waiting for the ball to get to them, this is especially important during crunch moments, imo, this concept has been lacking at times with the Bills, just a fans opinion.

The Chiefs are masters of the fourth quarter. They always find a way to move the chains quickly when needed, and they manage the clock perfectly. Most importantly, they never panic and always believe they will come out on top. As long as they can keep the game close through 3 Qs, they will prevail.

Bass's issues started after a cheap shot on the field.

Bass should be working with a kicking specialist during off-season and Bills should sign an assistant special teams coach with previous experience in NFL in kicking.

What drives me crazy about the Chiefs is that Mahomes somehow plays badly against the Bengals basically all the time.

 

i know there’s a coaching element, but his first pick was just a complete and total brain fart.

Haha, we are still doing this. They had a hands to face penalty called against them play before and there was a legit PI on the 4th down. Guess who got a lot of calls? The Pats. Really good teams seem to always get luckier. Couldn’t be all time great qbs or coaches. It’s the refs helping them!!!

This is 100%. Mahomes has done it so many times, he becomes a baby and is genuinely shocked when they don’t win. 
 

we have that until we get to the playoffs. Now it’s almost like we think of ways we can lose the game.

This is the second time that the Bengals are crying about refs, but in both cases their offense could have prevented this from even being an issue. Yesterday, all they needed was a few first downs to ice the game. Instead, their OL let them down again. I knew exactly how this would end as soon as the punt team came in. In the AFC CG two seasons ago, the vaunted Bengals offense got the ball with 2 minutes left in a tie game. All they needed to do was to get a few first downs and kick the game winning FG. What happened? They punted. The Bengals love to talk about "Burrowhead" and about how they're the only team that can beat Mahomes, but in the last two big games against them, they came up small in the end.

Except in the playoffs. KC is more like the Patriots teams during their dominance. They do all the little things well under pressure while their opponents, including the Bills, make basic mistakes when the pressure is high. Now it’s at a point where opponents feel the pressure when playing them in big games and try extra hard to win that will inevitably lead to more mistakes at crucial times.

Found this interesting: 17 INTs against mahomes have been negated via defensive penalty.  Leads the league. 

 

Wonder how many of those 17 go a different way if the INT stands

Cincinnati settled for four field goals (2 inside redzone) and their QB gave up a fumble scoop and score.  That's potentially 23 points lost right there.  

 

But, at the end of the day, as others have said, you've got a HOF QB, head coach and kicker.

What other QB or team facing a 4th and 16 and out of FG range, with literally seconds left in the game, gets a DB to slam into a WR before the ball arrives ? ... Does it ever happen for the Bills ?

 

Don't get me wrong, it was PI, just the timing is amazing to benefit that team.

Yesterday Joe Burrow put up a 103 passer rating. P. Mahomes was at 80.  In 95%+ of games a passer rating gap that big would result in a loss for the lower rated team. 

Yesterday the Chiefs had 3 turnovers to the Bengals one turnover.  Conventional wisdom is that it is nearly impossible to win a game with a minus 2 turnover ratio.  (Statistically teams with a +2 margin win 81% of games)

Yesterday the Chiefs over came both of these situations and still found a way to win. In my casual observation, the Chiefs seem to find ways to win, more often than anyone else in situations where they should lose.   I think it is tough to statisicially assess this, because in all but about 3-4 games a season, the Chiefs are going to statiscially out match opponents. 

 

Note- Flip side of this is the Bengals finding a way to lose a game they should have won. 

The bold part above is the main reason the Chiefs win championships.  But I think the rest of the post points out a small contributer. 

My understanding is that the best predictor is points off of turnover differential, not TO differential. The Chiefs got 7 and Cincy 10, so it was closer than a 3-1 ratio. That said, the Bengals did do better on that stat. The other thing that doesn't get factored into passing stats is DPIs, and the Bengals had a lot more penalties than KC -- and the killer long (29 yards) DPI that ended the game.
