K-9 Posted October 19 Posted October 19 Seems we’ve had this same discussion about helmets and how they can mitigate concussions many times here over the years. Bottom line is that until a device is invented that can prevent the brain from sloshing around and smashing into the side of the skull then helmets, and whatever extra padding you wish to add to them, will continue to offer very little protection. 1 2 Quote

nedboy7 Posted October 19 Posted October 19 You don’t have to have a concussion in order to have life long issues playing in the NFL. Or die early. Or have neurological issues. If Tua wants to play he can play. I don’t get this narrative about how he shouldn’t be allowed. Or that people are grossed out. Or the NFL is complicit in his demise. The entire concept of the NFL is gross. It’s up to him and his family. Quote

Bills had a player Mark Kelso's who had repeated problems with concussions and did not have one after getting "Giant Helmet". https://www.buffalorumblings.com/2012/7/3/3134086/nfl-concussion-litigation-mark-kelso-buffalo-bills Quote

The entire concept of the NFL is gross. It’s up to him and his family. It is his choice right now. He (and the whole football world) knows what could happen. I will bring up (once again) what bugs me some. How does Tua's opponents handle this? Nobody wants to be the guy to give him another concussion, but these defenders have a job to do. Every defense wants to "rough up" the opposing QB and get him worried about throwing the ball. Will they be treated differently because of Tua's situation? How much more extra "protection" will the officials give him? One can even see that this puts and added level of worry to the Miami Dolphins OL. None of them want to be the guy to miss a block and get Tua's bell rung again. It is for sure Tua's decision, but it affects a lot of other people too. 1 1 Quote
Rocky Landing Posted October 19 Posted October 19 I've been under the assumption that there have been injury settlement negotiations going on behind the scenes. It feels like Tua and the Fish are playing a game of chicken. If Tua's is not allowed to play because of his injury, he gets paid. If he quits because of his injury, he doesn't. So far, neither side is flinching, and the NFL has declined to get involved (which is tantamount to siding with the Dolphins). And still, Grier, and the Dolphins have done nothing to shore up their porous O-line, and give Tua some modicum of protection. Instead, they will continue with their get-the-ball-out-of-your-hands-as-fast-as-humaly-possible offensive scheme. Maybe they're hoping that opposing defenses will be easy on him, rather than take the risk of killing someone on the field? Quote

NFL logically does not want to set a precedent which would allow players to collect contacts for quitting for any reason for there already are too many players which have done that. Barry Sanders played chicken-and-egg game with Lions not paying back signing bonus saying he might come out of retirement (which he never did) and each year paying back portion of signing bonus while earning money on money not paid back. NFL could create an exception allowing Tua to keep guarantee but it will not count against cap and that would set ANOTHER precedent. NFLPA could offer to help Tua out post paying back money retiring on his own but NFLPA would hate doing that since they only want to get money (Is NFLPA a non-profit like NFL?). There is no good solution and problems will get worse as players QBs especially get higher and higher salaries with more and more (or all 😝) contracts. Quote
sleeby Posted October 19 Posted October 19 " But how do we get it inside the human skull..." through the ears, nose and a small hole drilled into top of skull cap, add non expanding Great Stuff on all sides and Bob's yer uncle. I'm on the fence on this. Was against his choice but when thinking about car crashes, ladder falls, boxers being KOd and worse, MMA, race car crashes, etc, who am I to judge what he wants to do. So. . .which Bills defensive player will get their turn in the negative media when it happens? Quote

Fleezoid Posted October 19 Posted October 19 I think he'll be fine. The ball will be out of his hands in 1.2 seconds every play. That short passing game will not be sustainable. Especially if smart teams play press man almost exclusively. Quote
