He gets a guided tour around the QB and then pretty much gives up. No idea why he is out there in place of Rousseau. This is what i saw as well. Rousseau needs reps, and at least there's a chance at a big play with him. VM is getting manhandled at the point of attack, and just gets bounced 10 yards past the QB. I'll give Miller a little grace here bc getting back up to game speed but if he pulls another no show next week he's gotta get his reps reduced 1

Yesterday was one bull rush after another. He forced Tua to run up the middle once. Very disappointing. But who are you going to give his reps to? There is no one on the team that can rush the passer outside of Rousseau.

The Dolphins were getting the ball out quickly most of the game. You try to keep Tua in the pocket because of his size. Do you honestly think Miller just didn't want to use other moves? There is a game plan to follow. 3
SoCal Deek
He spends an entire MONTH sitting at home on a personal conduct suspension and then comes back refreshed to end up sitting out most of the game. Hes toast! Unbelievably bad signing. 1 1 1
Sierra Foothills
Like all great pass rushers Von actually has a repertoire of moves. With the great pass rushers they usually start with straight bull rushers to feel their opponent out (and if they can walk the blocker back into the QB then why do anything else?) As it's been explained to me, it's kind of like martial arts. Then on critical downs they'll counter or show something they haven't yet used. That's why they are more effective with more volume. The early rushes setup the later rushes. Von showed conclusively before his suspension that he still has it... regardless of what the bipolar and negative say. Tua gets the ball out in 2.63 seconds... fastest in the NFL. It's very difficult sacking him. As with Coleman, Davis, Bernard, etc. etc. etc. the naysayers will disappear when Von starts piling up sacks again. On the other hand, if you just dislike him for personal reasons then say so... but that's separate from his abilities as a pass rusher.

I suspect the plan was bigger DEs to offset constant use of nickel agains two WR sets.
Man with No Name
the lack of pass rush was very noticeable on the Dolphins game tying drive. Obvious passing situation and Tua gets a perfect pocket for seconds. You don't always get the sack, but you would like to see a guy eventually beat his man even if it's too little too late. I thought Von looked okay on the very last play, the 5 second play. He went past the pocket and then came hard back towards the line as Tua flipped the ball out. kota
Bills defense is better without Von. He doesn't defend the run. 1

I agree with many of your posts, but honestly expected more out of Von yesterday and I hold no personal grudges against the man. He was AWOL and there were plenty of throws where Tua had to go to his second or third read and we got no heat on him. Not just Von, I expected more out of our DEs in general generating some heat or just getting their hands up in throwing lanes to the flats and tipping a few of the flurry of short passes QBs have been able to make against us. Needs fixing across the line and IMO Von has not nearly earned any of that big paycheck OBD cut him. Honestly not happy with the defense as a whole. I know McD's philosophy is light boxes 2-high safeties so our DBs are not on an island playing nickel with the LBs in coverage. The idea is not giving up the big passing play, but giving up some runs, but we are getting eaten alive and even when you would expect some kind of adjustment in the red zone where the bend needs to stop bending - we break and give up scores. I don't see the point of giving up 90 yard drives that end up in TDs and eats up all the clock and leaves Allen and our offense cooling their heels. So Von was only one of the things that I found annoying with this lazy approach to this vanilla defensive game planning. Coaches may have to build in some mechanisms for recognizing personnel grouping/packages and occasionally doing some different things to stop the runs or the short passes for long gains. Or we need the players that can execute McD's 4-man front/light box defense and tighten up when needed in the red zone. Cry when Von Miller ACL completely kills 18months of his career... dude was playing good ball before his 4 games off. I dont think of Tua as a great passer out of the pocket. Which to me means a spin move back to in between the tackle and guard might be wise. But as you said the ball was coming out super quick so it's unrealistic to think we were going to get several pressures/sacks.

I'm not really down on Von, but it is sad how badly Beane's biggest investment besides Allen has paid off. Here's hoping he can still contribute once he gets his game legs back. Putting Von on final Hail Mary makes no sense even in his prime. It is not fitting to his skill set. I am sure some will point as reason why Coach McD should be replaced.
