GASabresIUFan Posted September 8 Posted September 8 (edited) Did you know that a coach with McD to start his last name has never won a Super Bowl? Edited September 8 by GASabresIUFan 1 2 Quote

This is completely false and easily proven with 30 seconds of research. Let’s start with John Madden and the Raiders. 1st Superbowl 1976 - his 8th season with Oakland. Do you know him - got an entire video game franchise named after him. How about Bill Cower? Started in 1992 in Pittsburgh - won his first Super Bowl in 2005 - so 13 years in Pittsburgh before his first Super Bowl. That message must have been super stale. Then you have a coach like Tom Landry that won his first Super Bowl and first championship in year 12. Not all of them were SB years, but he never won a NFL championship before the merger either. So that is 3 guys that break the thread. Then there are all of the coaches mentioned that coached for way more than 7 years on multiple teams before finding the magic to win one. Is it common - No, but it has happened multiple times already in the history of the NFL. 🤦♂️🤷♂️ Yeah the op’s stat was incorrect. What is correct, however, is no coach/qb combo has ever won a Super Bowl after being together for 5+ years if they haven’t already won one together. 1 Quote
MJS Posted September 8 Posted September 8 Most coaches don't win superbowls, because it is extremely difficult to do. So, there is a whole slew of stats around coaches not winning superbowls. None of them say much else besides the fact that superbowls are extremely hard to win. Only 35 coaches have won a superbowl. Of those, only 14 have won more than one. We are talking about a rare thing. It puts the greatness of dynasties like the Patriots into perspective. What they did was so improbable, it is nearly statistically impossible. And yet, we are in the midst of another dynasty with the Chiefs. 1 1 Quote

The original poster is pointing out that all 35 did it within 7 years of head coaching the team they won with. Winning a Super Bowl after that time frame would not only be rare, it would be unique. 2 Quote

And Landry really doesn't count, if you count only Super Bowl seasons. Madden is the outlier on making a Super Bowl that far into his tenure. Quote
uticaclub Posted September 8 Posted September 8 I thought it was no coach/QB combo have it after 5 Quote

When we are dealing with such small sample sizes (only 35 super bowl winning coaches), nothing is really an outlier. 1 Quote

I’d love to see a new HC but I’m not using this in any future argument in favour of replacing g him. The Bills have the 2nd best record in the NFL over the past 5 years. Statistically it's much easier to get worse than better with a new coach as there's much less room for improvement. Quote
Rock-A-Bye Beasley Posted September 8 Posted September 8 2 hours ago, boater said: McDermott haters.... in their vivid imaginations, there is a more qualified sure-fire coach out there just waiting for a job. Waiting for the Bills job to be more specific. This unicorn coach hasn't been hired by the other 31 teams because they don't see the diamond in the rough. All of the following coaches were once thought to be this magical unicorn: G Williams, M Mularkey, D Jauron, P Fewell, C Gailey, D Marrone, R Ryan. Heh... why not roll the dice again? The OP is wrong but you’re too risk-averse. Plenty of good coaches have been hired since 13 seconds. Including Doug Peterson who was my answer to your gotcha question back then and out coached McDermott last season. 2 1 Quote

That’s correct, but at some point you roll the dice instead of continuing to bang your head on the same door until one day your 1st ballot HOF QB retires or walks out the door. Fear of the unknown can’t hold you back from making a change, all that being said I’m pulling for McDermott and hope he gets it done. 1 Quote
Dr.Sack Posted September 8 Posted September 8 No kicker has ever missed 30% of his FGs in the playoffs and won a Super Bowl. Quote
