Jauronimo Posted November 8 Posted November 8 Flukey outcomes and random results every night considered... The Sabres played another great game against one of the league's top teams. They were the better team right out of the gate and did not relent. The Rangers settled in but couldn't get anything going despite multiple early PP opportunities. Rags folded once it was 3-0. Second line finally showed up. Benson's play stood out. He creates a lot of turnovers in transition. Kid line showed their potential. That effort will win a lot of games. 5 1 1 Quote

How much sooner can you get than one month in? I heard on WGR that Ruff was being patient with this group, but that patience has quickly run out. Better it happened now. I think waiting until now was the right thing. you have to have a decent sample size to back up your decisions/moves. Quote

Players are in a new system, lots of new faces after free agency, new lines, new coach. Yes, you absolutely need to see a few games to make an assessment. Bryson has maximized his opportunities the past few seasons. A lot of fans are down on him, but I think he's played well. I don't mind Gilbert at all. He's a steady stay at home Dman. I have not seen him running around like a headless chicken at all which was a staple of Jokiharju's game. 1 Quote

The last thing they needed was another left handed offensive defenseman. It made zero sense as soon as it happened. and it’s not just Mittelstadt who’s looking great after leaving Buffalo. It’s been a consistent thing going all the way back to Botterill. ROR, Montour, Reinhart, Eichel, Hagel, Rodrigues. Even Bogosian won a cup the year he left Buffalo. It seems like literally everyone they trade away blossoms. To me, that clearly shows the issue is with the Sabres organization. -9 with 15 points isn't a great look tbh. Quote
QCity Posted November 9 Posted November 9 OK let's see. Saturday matinee game have seemed flat for years. Beat a mediocre west coast team at home. Quote

The -9 isn’t great (if you put stock in plus/minus) but the 15 points would be 2nd on the Sabres in scoring right now, only 1 point behind Tage Thompson (16pts) for the lead. and at the time I posted that he was, or had just been, in the top 10-15 in the NHL in total points (ahead of all Sabres players iirc). edit - but I was being over-emotional to call it a “terrible, terrible” trade. Byram is a good player, is younger and probably has a higher ceiling than Mittelstadt. I just didn’t think it made sense to trade for another left handed offensive defenseman with already having Dahlin + power and paying them both big money. Are they going to pay Byram too? They didn’t want to pay another center $7M but they’ll give a third LH defenseman $7+M? Edited November 9 by BillsFan4 Quote

I am really hoping that ass kicking of the rangers boosts their confidence and they can get into a groove. They need to start stacking some wins before Thanksgiving. Historically, the teams in a playoff spot by Thanksgiving usually make it. They are currently only 2 points back of 3rd in the division even though they sit in the 6th wildcard spot right now. Quote

They’re still so bipolar though. Which version are we getting each night? They can be great or horrible and there’s seemingly no rhyme or reason to guessing which one it’ll be. I hope the above reports are true and it’s gloves off time from Lindy. Team has been softer than baby crap for years, nothing gets better till that changes. Quote

I am hoping that more time under Lindy will bring more consistency to their game. They look good when they play the way Lindy wants them to. But there’s still a lot of dumb mistakes in their game that need to continue to be coached out. And yes I think Lindy is done being patient. Him benching Samuelsson seems to have woken the team back up. you should listen to some of ruff’s press conferences. He pulls no punches. I love it. 1 Quote
Jauronimo Posted November 9 Posted November 9 Up and down performance today but they salvaged a blown 3rd period lead and got the W. Great start to the game, they dominated the Flames in the first. Penalties totally derailed their momentum in the 2nd period. 3rd period they were on their heels. UPL bailed them out big time. Penalty Kill was clutch, Power Play maintained momentum and they stole a W in a game they would have given away last season or even earlier in the year. Two 3 game win streaks so far this year. It took until March for the team to register two 3 game streaks last season. 1 Quote
QCity Posted November 9 Posted November 9 Calgary really tilted the ice in that 3rd period. Wasn't pretty but it's 2 points. UPL was fantastic. They really leaned on Byram (32+ minutes!) and I think we will see the return of Mule on Monday. 1 Quote
Beast Posted November 9 Posted November 9 (edited) Winning games like that is a great sign. They played rather loose in the 3rd, paid the price for it, struggled to get it to a SO but did…and then won. The Sabres don’t win games like that. UPL is starting to round into form. jayg Posted November 11 Posted November 11 The game they "should win" and they don't. Score 5 and give up 7. They will continue to get better though. I'm not giving up! Quote
