Projecting the 53 man roster

Recommended Posts

I was looking at the dead cap on some of the bubble players.  https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/buffalo-bills/overview/_/year/2024

I wonder how much this will play into the decision making.  (Dead cap in "(DC)"

For example - Linebacker - There are 5 guys competing for 3 or 4 jobs.  The are Morrow (750K), D Jones (zero), Ulofoshio (314K), Spector (52K) and Andreessen ($2500).  Could they cut Jones to save the 750K dead cap if Morrow is cut?

What about  OL?  I think we all agree that the top 9 are set in stone - Brown, Dawkins, Torrence, Edwards, McGovern, Anderson, Van Denmark, SVPG and Grable.  Will they keep Collins as the 10th OL to save his 1.5 million dead cap and release Clapp (287.5K) or will they say F-it and take the nearly 1.8 mill dead cap hit and cut both?

WR - Shorter (243K) vs Shavers (9k) vs Hamler (zero)?

DE - Jonathan (1.75K). Such a low dead cap hit, I can see them cutting him if they think they can get him to the PS.

Two guys with surprisingly large dead cap Gore (90k) and Britton (G) (100K).

Dead cap for guys who will almost certainly be cut - Toohill (15k), Keaton Bills (50K), Couch (70K), Lovely (15K), Cline (9k), Davidson (4.5K), Ankou (7.5K), Isabella (8K), K. Jackson (zero), and McKitty (4K).

One guy who should be cut but won't be is Trubisky (1.5 million).

FYI Ferguson (LS) has only a $2500 dead cap.  I makes sense for him to get cut and then re-signed so that they can get an injured player on the 53 and then put that player on IR to reopen Ferguson's roster spot.

I don’t totally disagree with you…

just think  the roster is structured slightly differently

2QB

4RB

5WR

3TE

9OL

off=23

4DT

5 DE

5 LB

5 CB

4 S

def=23

4 ST K,P,LS, returner

3 wildcards

with the wildcards it’s about who might get claimed vs PS. Who needs in season IR

Milano goes on preseason IR with intent on going back. Another players goes this route ( Morris?)

i think MVS gets cut then to PS or is in the 4 wildcards for in season IR, same with Gore

i also think you coukd see P and LS get cut to protectvthevrostervthen resigned but I don’t know their contract structure.

I’m curious if they make a trade.

I understand what your saying but I'm not going project waiver claims and trades etc outside of a clear glut of secondary players. It seems we're on the same page I have 24 offensive players and 26 players on defense plus the 3 specialists.

I agree with the idea of Ferguson being cut and keeping someone to put on IR but I question who that person is that they want to keep on the 53 who they want to put on season ending IR that they fear would be scooped up by another team. I dont know maybe you have a guy or two in your thought process.

A team can bring back 8 players from IR during the season.  The new rules allow for two of the 8 to be designated before Tuesday.  Right now it looks like we have at least candidates in Milano (assuming management thinks his injury isn’t season ending), Trubisky and Morris.  If they want all 3 on IR to start the season, they are going to need Ferguson’s roster spot.

Yea I hear ya. I think you can get around Trubisky or really any of them besides Milano by rostering them and making them inactive and calling up guys from the PS for 2-3 weeks instead of IRing them for an auto 4 weeks. Maybe they cut Ferguson and give him a contract extension by doing it since he’s a FA after the year. Like do me a solid and we’ll do you a solid type thing

He’ll get another signing bonus by re-signing if released.
