Now would be a good time to move Douglas to Safety

Are there actual examples guys transitioning from CB to S in the NFL? Sure there are cases, but it's not something that happens often, and yet it's brought up constantly.

It makes no sense. You don't take a very good CB and turn him into a S. And Rasul is not going to transition to S in a contract year. It's not happening.

Rod Woodson, Charles Woodson, Ronnie Lott, Troy Vincent, Devin McCourty, Kareem Jackson

Yeah but in George Wilson’s case he went from like 7th on the depth chart as a WR to safety, way different conversation

True that.  Same for Logan Thomas who went from 4th sting QB to starting TE.

The counter of course is Rod Woodson went from HOF CB to a HOF safety.  Aeneas Williams made a ProBowl as a safety.

Hall of Famers Rod Woodson and Ronnie Lott both transitioned from CB to Safety later in their careers.

Vic Fangio's protestations notwithstanding, it's a move that has been made by many players over the decades.

But more than that, it's the idea of moving a good player from a high value position like corner or left tackle to a lower value position like safety or guard. Moving an aging corner to safety or an aging tackle to guard sometimes makes sense. See Troy Vincent or Rod Woodson. Rasul Douglas is 29 and was the Bills' best corner last year. Moving him does not make sense.

Another thing that hasn't been brought up that is VERY relevant is that Rasul Douglas is in the last year of his contract.

I would bet immense sums of money that he has ZERO DESIRE to switch to a position where he'll be making much less money.

I actually think with his traits that he would be a great safety some day but the original suggestion isn't anywhere in the realm of possibility at this time.

Look no further than your Bills team. Both Hyde and Poyer were drafted as CBs.

Rod Woodson and Ronnie Lott are the two most obvious. Both had HOF careers at both positions. Woodson was a better CB and Lott a better safety.

Charles Woodson. Devin McCourty. Malcolm Jenkins. Chauncey Gardner-Johnson. Aaron Williams. New Bill Kareem Jackson. Actually in just 20 seconds thinking about it there are six who went from corner to be good safeties (with a couple of elite guys in there). I am not arguing for it with Rasul to be clear. But I don't think Fangio is right when he says the number is very small.

Some of you guys really need to calm down.   Its what, the second week of training camp?

Yeah but before you know it, it'll  be week 3. So we're just getting a jump on the "way too early" position panic!

Wasn't the only time we did this in the past couple decades with Troy Vincent?

I think it's such a rarity because it's almost always a dumb idea. The only time you could justify it is if the person playing CB has significantly lost a step, you have nothing to offer at the FS position AND you have better available CBs than the one you're moving.

We are not in that position.

Aaron Williams.
