Should we be concerned about Milano in pass coverage this year?

No.

This after a few days of training camp with him off a major injury.  Be realistic.

Next question.

Exactly, this thread is like fear mongering when common sense dictates he is just proverbially getting his sea legs under him.  Every McD interview states on Milano, “ we are bringing him along carefully and the trainers and doctors have to clear everything.”

Truth is Milano is now 30 years old. Not everyone is Lavonte David. He may never be the same player again. I believe Dorian Williams will be ready to step in and play a big role on defense if need be.

I am with you here... I am hopeful he can recover and become the game wrecker he was. But each injury takes a toll not sure how many more he can sustain. But we sure could use his dominance at LB this year.

I would hope & i do think that McD is smart enough to bring him back slowly on some sort of a pitch count thing . He not only has to over come the physical but the mental side of the injury, and until he's sure in his mind that his leg is good he won't be the same .

My daughter tore her ACL in high school as a soccer player and it took her a minute to regain her faith in how strong her knee until a coach told her that her knee was stronger now than before the injury so just play her game & after that she was good until she tore the ACL in the other knee .

Which TOTALLY sucked ! I know the injury is different but it will take a minute i would think for him to regain his complete confidence !

Before anyone says anything, I get it, all the Training Camp practices to date have been no pads.

Today in pass coverage, Milano was getting burned by the RB’s. I’m concerned his leg injury is going to take another year to fully heal before Milano is back to his normal self. While Tre White and Von Miller had different types of leg injuries, we’ve seen both players come back the next season from their injuries and did not produce at the level they did before their injuries. Tre did look like his old self at the start of last season (two years removed from his injury), before his season ending injury. Von Miller stated he probably shouldn’t have played last season as he was ineffective in his return.

If Milano is struggling in pass protection now, should the Bills limit his play this season (or at least early on?) Also, what is the Bills backup plan if Milano struggles? We don’t need AJ Klein brought out of retirement again.

Let's hope Dorian Williams is ready for prime time.  He showed flashes last year, so I am hopeful.  And, I buy your premise here.

Milano is as tough and competitive a player as there is.  He will go as hard as he can for as long as he can with his career.  I see him playing at a high level for at least another 3-4 seasons if he can stay reasonably healthy.

it’s been 4 days of training camp. He needs to knock the rust off.  And the guys he is covering are good too.  No one on defense dominates every snap in today’s NFL.  It just doesn’t happen.

if Milano needs a little time to get up to speed, we have Spector Williams Morrow Jones and the rookie from UW. We are deep at LB and across the entire roster (Maybe could use another boundary CB depending on how solid Ingram looks)

The problem is the camp reports from media are often contradictory.    I’ve read that Milano was beat by Ray but also that he got to the sideline.  Who knows what the real story is?

Those are different plays. Milano has been beaten and he has had some good reps.  Hes not getting toasted every play.

we all should be concerned about Milano's health. Not necessarily because of these reports from training camp though, but for simply Matt's injury history.

Anything that affects Matt's mobility is an issue, as that is what makes him the player he is. The coaches are keeping a close eye on him I'd imagine. The team's doctors & specialists in consultation as well. What's the better alternative to what we're doing now? None, okay then.

well now I’m concerned about your concern, and the last thing I need is another thing to be concerned about, obviously.

While your concern for my concern is concerning, in and of itself, my initial concern was a genuine concern. I mean,  concerning the initial concern obviously.

I will see your concern, and in a concerned manner, raise it to a new level of concern.

Hopefully, you do not get concerned with this action. It will prove to be concerning to me if you do.

Did Milano usually cover backs when he was 100% ?

I would expect in general that people should scale their expectations back with the defense to what it was in 2017, bend not break unit that has some talented players, some vets who can do stuff, and some kids finding their way. From 2019 on the defense in the regular season rarely gets blown out and has been pretty stout while being normally in the top 10 if not top 5 statistically. I could see the defense a bit more lower top 16 as they recalibrate what they are.

You keep this up and we will have to put you on double secret probation, that is how concerned I am

I understand that expectation, but actually, that's where I was last year after we lost Edmunds in the off-season and didn't have Von Miller.

I was expecting a mid-pack defense and hoping it was good enough, and it exceeded my expectations

Regarding Milano, it's the start of training camp and he's out there showing flashes.  I'll see where he is at the end of training camp before being concerned.

Best to wait until the real games start:

1) these are different plays

2) all of our players have had good and bad plays - Douglas, Benford, Elam, Rapp, Hamlin, Bernard and yes, Milano

It's impossible to get a full picture of how a player is doing from media training camp reports which are typically high-lights and low-lights

Brasky has been kind of beating the "Milano Watch" drum I think as his personal way of drawing clicks and views

I go with this Milano watch:

There was a thing where Erik Turner of Cover1 gave his wife a glass that said "Drink until your husband looks like Josh Allen" and apparently she crossed it out and wrote "Matt Milano" LOL

I don't think the Guido Torpedo goes lonely
