Javon Solomon is only player listed as EDGE on the roster. Not making a big deal out of it, but it is a little curious.

Quarterbacks, punters, and kickers: Numbers 1-19

Running backs and defensive backs: Numbers 20-49

Centers: Number 50-59

Extras 60–79

Offensive guards and tackles: Numbers 60–79

Wide receivers: Numbers 10–19 and 80–89

Tight ends and H-backs: Numbers 40–49 and 80–89

Defensive linemen: Numbers 50–79 and 90–99

Linebackers: Numbers 40–59

Extras 90–99

Bills DEs feel very strong side/weak side right now. Strong side is Rousseau with smoot as back up and weak side is AJ/Von split with Javon also getting in but even less early downs.

strong/weak side may not be to the TE so much as passing strength because you want taron with Rousseau ahead of him on the passing strength. I ain’t got the time but I wonder how much taron lined up on groot or Shaqs side on early downs. Obvious passing and run downs wouldn’t need this approach as much imo.

People aren't mentioning him but I think Toohill is going to play.

They arent mentioning him cause of smoot I think.

Do you think they keep 6 DE?  If not who do you cut from Groot, AJ, Von, Smoot, Solomon.

Most people have Smoot over Toohill.  Toohill got a good number of sacks last year (5) but it was in a similar efficiency (5 sacks on ~450 snaps) as Smoot in 2022 (year he sustained ankle injury).  Smoot had more pressures so was more disruptive.  If smoot can return to that form after being another year removed from the achilles I think he is the better player.  Would also note that Washington shipped off like all their DE and didnt retain Toohill (or play him the final game of the season, indicating they wanted to look at other players unless I missed an injury).  That doesnt inspire a lot of confidence in him as a player either.

If he can stick as a STs player that may guarantee him a roster spot but I do wonder if he can:

• Big enough to hold up as a pure EDGE.

• Play off the ball.

• Play EDGE in wide formations.

• Blitz from SAM.

• Any positional versatility.

• Can he hold up in zone coverage.

Off ball wide 9 alignments where he can use his quickness off the snap, low center of balance, and long arms to gain the edge.

Not a stack and shed guy, but has a high motor and can slip between blockers, navigate traffic and has a nose for finding the ball on running plays.

If OL blockers get their hands on him I think they win so hand fighting and using that long reach will be crucial if teams run at him.

Interesting prospect and a kind of end we have not seen in a McDermott defense.

We will see how much of his game transfers to the pros, but we need some juice on those 3rd and longs.

I think to have his jersey number he had to be listed as a linebacker.

Ahhh, that explains it.  I was thinking it was his effective age.

Joe B has had a couple articles on this topic.

Both Miller and Rousseau perform better from the left side, and Bills DE lined up more R vs L than strong vs weak formation side.

Toohill is making the team, IMO, with little issue.  Smoot, if he returns to form will too.  The 5th round rookie needs to beat them out or he's going to the PS, and I don't see him beating them out.

To me Toohill seems like a McDermott type of player.  High effort, non stop motor.

He’s an important player on this team IMO. That’s tough to say about a 5th round rookie but that’s how I feel. He’s going to have to play some and contribute 5+ sacks. He’s a guy with more production than traits. It’s a little different profile than you usually see from Beane. He is a higher floor and lower ceiling prospect than we typically see. That’s fine in this case. He should be a guy that can be a part of the rotation for the forseeable future. I don’t think that he will ever lead the NFL in sacks like he did the NCAA but will be a contributor for a long time.

High production low trait low ceiling was Boogie boy. Don’t like those players as a general rule high but Solomon getting a handful of sacks would be huge.

We don’t have a single left fielder listed.  Doomed.

Well with our great pitching no one's hitting to left field against us.

Thats fair.  Would mention that 5th round is bit of an investment for a player that wont make the team (I'm seeing 75% of 5th rounders make the roster link).  I would also think Toohill is easier to stash on the PS.    Agree Toohill is high effort/non stop motor, but I am much more interested in keeping the rights to solomon than keeping toohill.

I played both "flanker" and "split end" in high school.  On Sundays, I rooted for my favorite "halfback" - OJ.    In my dad's time, there were other positions we don't hear much about anymore: "safety man," "wingback," "setback," "monster back"...

Nowadays, we have wills and sams, h-backs and nickel backs, X's and Z's, slot corners and box safeties.   Nose guards are now called nose tackles.  "Defensive halfbacks" later became "cornerbacks" and are mostly called "corners" now.  "Wedge busters" were made extinct by rule changes.

It's funny how the positional names morph over time.

When I think about "Edge," I think either about a DE or OLB who specialized in rushing the passer.

He will be a pass rush specialists and 3rd and long downs. Looking forward to see him out there. Tons of potential.

I was never a big fan of preseason games but this year  i won’t miss a game , there’s few players I’ll be keeping my eye on and Solomon is definitely one of them
