BillsDad51 Posted July 9 Posted July 9 Javon Solomon is only player listed as EDGE on the roster. Not making a big deal out of it, but it is a little curious. 1 Quote

Saint Doug Posted July 9 Posted July 9 Back when I was younger, there was no such a thing as an EDGE. Considering DEs make more money than LBs, some ingenious agent said, my client isn’t a LB, he should be paid as a DE, because all he does is rush the passer. Thus the EDGE was born. But they are basically just a LB. 1 Quote
ghostwriter Posted July 9 Posted July 9 If he can stick as a STs player that may guarantee him a roster spot but I do wonder if he can: • Big enough to hold up as a pure EDGE. • Play off the ball. • Play EDGE in wide formations. • Blitz from SAM. • Any positional versatility. • Can he hold up in zone coverage. 1 Quote

Maybe play the same position as Lorenzo Alexander? 1 1 Quote
MPL Posted July 9 Posted July 9 What I don't understand is why EDGE is in all caps? It's not an abbreviation like QB, DL, LB, or WR. I mean, Nobody else gets their entire position spelled out in all caps. That lack of consistency in how we abbreviate and capitalize positions... I mean, you just can't win a Super Bowl with that kind of indifference. Just can't. 1 5 3 Quote

Bills DEs feel very strong side/weak side right now. Strong side is Rousseau with smoot as back up and weak side is AJ/Von split with Javon also getting in but even less early downs. strong/weak side may not be to the TE so much as passing strength because you want taron with Rousseau ahead of him on the passing strength. I ain’t got the time but I wonder how much taron lined up on groot or Shaqs side on early downs. Obvious passing and run downs wouldn’t need this approach as much imo. 1 Quote
NickelCity Posted July 9 Posted July 9 It's that time of the year where I think he's gonna be dynamite. Quote

WhitewalkerInPhilly Posted July 9 Posted July 9 If it's an issue of nomenclature I have seen it before used to designate a pass rushing specialist, especially when you're trying to parse the difference between a 3-4 and 4-3 scheme DE. There is bleed and sensational players but the spectrum usually looks something like this: - 3/4 DE: a big body, usually a space eater. Mostly a dying out position. - 4/3 DE: expected to be able to both set the edge in run support and pass rush, though it can vary how much of each. Mario Williams, Groot, Shaq. -EDGE: a designated pass rusher. Lines up wide over the OT (or TE) and pins their ears back. Hughes, Von Miller -Strongside linebacker: plays off but close to the line in run support, often included in blitz packages. The Bills have mostly phased it out to play 4-2 nickel but this was what Lorenzo Alexander was designated as in McDermott's first year. So calling him EDGE hints at his they plan to start him: coming in as a rotational pass rusher, especially on third and long situations, which matches his draft profile and a body type similar to Hughes. 2 Quote

Magox Posted July 9 Posted July 9 I'm cautiously optimistic of the pass rush Solomon can bring to the team. 2 Quote

I like your analysis here... I think one of the other things is that he will never or almost never be in pass coverage like a true LB. Quote
