Schoen had no choice regarding the Barkley situation.  His big mistake was the Jones contract in the first place.  How do you look at that guy and think he is the answer for the franchise?  But he did, and now he's trying to support him.

Agreed he should have cut bait immediately and told Mara he needed to start over.

 

Now he’s hitched his wagon to him and inevitably will have to have the conversation about how he wasted the owners money and needs to draft a new guy.

I think Mara wanted Jones more than Schoen and Daboll did.

Agreed, he was basically put in a no win situation, to me it is like extending a long term Tua contract.

in 2020, they went WR and CB with their first two picks. Despite having Amari Cooper and Michael Gallup at WR.

 

2 years later, Cooper is gone and they have their new #1 WR already in place.

 

In 2021, they went BPA at pick kne and took Micah Parson, a superstar EDGE.

 

In 2022, they took an OT/OG in the first, despite having Tyron Smith playing at an excellent level. Of course, he got hurt and then eventually left, and they have their replacement already there.

 

In 2024, they drafted ANOTHER OT in first, despite all of that above. Why? Because they focus on premium players at premium positions. Because they realize that needs change fast in the NFL, and players at OT/WR/CB are ALWAYS gonna get paid.

 

It’s easy to say, “oh we lost our left tackle/WR, let’s just draft one.” A child could do that. 
 

It’s smart to say, “let’s draft an OT we really like now and we are safe if something happens in the next year or two and we have to cut ties with Tyron Smith”

 

The Bills go, “oh man, we don’t have anyone at WR, we better draft one high.”

 

or in 2021, “oh man, we don’t have anyone at CB, we better draft one high.”

 

That strategy can work despite itself, and all teams do a little bit of it, but it’s a bad drafting strategy overall. It’s how you end up always playing catch up at the big time positions. 
 

49ers saw a potentially divorce with their stellar WR group. Took one they liked in the first to get ahead of it. Proactive.

 

Bills had to take a WR because they painted themselves into a corner and had no other choice. Reactive.

Matt, I simply stated my preference is to not watch these kind of shows.  I was forced when married to watch in bed the reality shows my ex-wife liked, amd that’s fine when you love someone.  I’ve never seen value in these types of shows.

The best example is Green Bay. They've drafted their last 2 QBs in the 1st round years before they needed them to play. Both times they had a HOF QB with tread left on his tires.

ok.  The cowboys have been looking for safeties for over a decade, they have been trying to put together a wr core made up of draft picks for a long time, they can not draft or develop a DT to save their life.  As far as tyron smith goes he is hurt every year and has been a major problem for them late in the season because of his injuries.  They finally drafted a guy to play there and he is actually their left guard.  They went through a lot of really bad players over there before they drafted smith two years ago.

 

They have had some great players fall into their laps in the first round through the years much like baltimore.  Dez bryant, lamb, parsons.  Mostly because of other teams decisions.

 

The Bills are just fine.  This obsession with WR here is bananas.

It is not really close, Jones has had like 15 TD passes max in a season.

The bolded has nothing to do with what I said. Like zero.

 

For a team that has been trying to find a safety, it’s telling that they haven’t drafted one high in years and years. You know why? Because it’s bad value. 

 

I’m not sure you are following the argument at all.

 

Tyron Smith had been hurt on and off but played 11 games the year before they drafted Smith. Some teams may have said it was just bad luck. The Cowboys saw the writing on the wall. Good for them.
