For a defensive specialist, I don't see too many games where he shut down a top-end QB in the playoffs. Maybe Lamar (though many would argue that he's not elite). I'll take that as one well-coached defensive game in McD's playoff tenure. Holding Watson to 22 points sounds ok but Watson was 20/25 for 247 yards so not really great pass D.

Someone please point me to where McDermott has consistently had good results limiting better than average QBs in the playoffs. I'm tired of hearing about how great we are in the regular season — I want to see meaning results — superior defensive coaching in the playoffs.

Those days are gone. Back in the early 2000s-present the NFL became all about having a franchise QB. There used to be shutdown corners like Blount, Sanders, Law, Revis and Sherman that could take over a game but I’m struggling to see any true shutdown CBs today. I’m not saying they’re not out there but just not as common.

Having a good defense and an elite running attack used to get you in the Playoffs 15, 20, 30 years ago.. but not today. If you have a franchise QB, having those things will certainly give you an edge, but you can’t rely on these things solely anymore to make a deep run but it’s very helpful if you have a legit QB.

Having a true franchise kicker is also a game changer as well.. Someone that can nail kicks 45-50 yards out like clockwork.. Some games you can get 9-12 points from FGs alone.

Here are McDermott's playoff games:

2023
Win against Pittsburgh: 37-17  (Mason Rudolph)

Loss to Chiefs: 24-27

2022

Win against Dolphins: 34-31  (Skylar Thompson with him nearly winning over Allen)
Loss to Bengals: 10-27

2021

Win vs. Pats: 47-17  (Mac Jones)

Loss to Chiefs: 36-42

2020

Win vs. Colts: 27-24   (Rivers at 39 in his last NFL game ever, he nearly beat us, in Buffalo)

Win vs. Ravens: 17-3   (Jackson absolutely sucks in the playoffs, not Bledsoe sucks, but well below average)

Loss vs. Chiefs: 24-38

2019

Loss vs. Texans: 19-22

2017

Loss vs. Jags: 3-10

I added some additional detail.  :)

We can make all the excuses we want for our losses, but there's no one impressive win in the list of wins.  There are several unimpressive wins though.  Miami vs. Thompson and Indy vs. Old Man Rivers.

You're all over the map in your argumentation.  It's dizzying.

Is it gaslighting ourselves to think that the team we are a fan of, that has been inarguably a top 5 team in the NFL for three straight seasons, will probably continue to be very good?  Why should we believe otherwise?

We are 3-7 vs Mahomes and Burrow and 0-4 in the playoffs. If our defense performed at even an average level compared to every team who has faced Mahomes or Burrow in the playoffs we would have been to multiple AFC championships. KC and the Bengals have done whatever they want offensively and we have no reason to expect that will change. Further, all we are even discussing is getting past the divisional round. Forget about the two more games required to actually do what we want to see done. If you want to ignore this and just focus on the regular season championships so be it. Wish I could but it's obvious we aren't seeing this defense change in the postseason.

We actually are seeing the defense change in the postseason lol. It goes from excellent to abject terrible

If we got even average NFL level defensive performances in the playoffs we'd have at least one Super Bowl appearance

The text you quoted is not mine, even though my name appeared as the person being quoted. It's as though text attributed to me had been written by a ghost writer. 😮

Anyway, and to your point: I'm not saying the defense needs to be the Steel Curtain of the '70s or the '85 Bears for this team to win championships. But, I am saying that the defense needs to do something, in postseason games against the Chiefs and Bengals. McDermott's best is two stops against the Chiefs in the postseason. Other defenses are getting six or even seven stops in postseason games against the Chiefs. If your defense is only getting two stops, that alone is nearly sufficient to determine the outcome of the game, almost without regard to the offense.

I don’t drink beer so you’ll have to settle for a like instead. Hopefully we have more luck this year.

Awsome read. Older article.  Gives you some history on McD all of which is very positive. But you see how clearly McD was an understudy of Reid, Johnson, even Spags.  How well Reid knew Johnson. Given what we have seen from his mentors it's just hard to envision Sean getting ahead of those guys when everything is on the line. He's likely a much better leader but he loses the X's and O's.

The Bills defense was never that good to begin with. They padded their stats against bad/average QB's and offenses but when facing a good QB/offense they also struggled in the regular season. It's one of the reasons why I wanted the Bills to move on from Sean and hire Bill. Bill is not only a much better HC then Sean but also a much better DC. His problem was he was a terrible GM and that is what led to his troubles in NE. Also, going from the GOAT to Mac Jones is a massive decline at the most important position. No coach could overcome that.

Maybe so but I would love to see what a guy like Mike Vrabel could do here with this team at this moment while the roster is being shuffled and the salary cap reset.

Vrabel's teams always play with a physical toughness that I think the Bills lack on both sides of the ball.  Would have loved to seen him hired this year and what would happen with his approach along with Josh Allen and the potential of this running game.

Doesn't matter though the organization has decided to keep McDermott in charge so we will just have to root for him.
