Back in the early 2000s-present the NFL became all about having a franchise QB. There used to be shutdown corners like Blount, Sanders, Law, Revis and Sherman that could take over a game but I’m struggling to see any true shutdown CBs today. I’m not saying they’re not out there but just not as common. Having a good defense and an elite running attack used to get you in the Playoffs 15, 20, 30 years ago.. but not today. If you have a franchise QB, having those things will certainly give you an edge, but you can’t rely on these things solely anymore to make a deep run but it’s very helpful if you have a legit QB. Having a true franchise kicker is also a game changer as well.. Someone that can nail kicks 45-50 yards out like clockwork.. Some games you can get 9-12 points from FGs alone. We can make all the excuses we want for our losses, but there's no one impressive win in the list of wins. There are several unimpressive wins though. But, I am saying that the defense needs to do something, in postseason games against the Chiefs and Bengals. McDermott's best is two stops against the Chiefs in the postseason. Other defenses are getting six or even seven stops in postseason games against the Chiefs. But you see how clearly McD was an understudy of Reid, Johnson, even Spags. How well Reid knew Johnson. Given what we have seen from his mentors it's just hard to envision Sean getting ahead of those guys when everything is on the line. They padded their stats against bad/average QB's and offenses but when facing a good QB/offense they also struggled in the regular season. It's one of the reasons why I wanted the Bills to move on from Sean and hire Bill. Bill is not only a much better HC then Sean but also a much better DC. His problem was he was a terrible GM and that is what led to his troubles in NE. Also, going from the GOAT to Mac Jones is a massive decline at the most important position. MikePJ76 Posted July 8 Share Posted July 8 Maybe so but I would love to see what a guy like Mike Vrabel could do here with this team at this moment while the roster is being shuffled and the salary cap reset. Vrabel's teams always play with a physical toughness that I think the Bills lack on both sides of the ball. Would have loved to seen him hired this year and what would happen with his approach along with Josh Allen and the potential of this running game.
