Yea but they are not dreadful. That is the accusation I was responding too.

Untrue and misleading

The division has been dreadful. That's what you were responding to. That the dolphins have merely been mediocre doesn't change that

A dreadful division doesn't send a second team to the playoffs 3 out of 4 years. If the poster had said the division has been mediocre I'd have no issue with that.

Huh?

The AFC East has produced 5 WC teams since 2017.

The AFC East has had 6 teams with 5 wins or less since 2017.

The AFC North has produced 4 WC teams since 2017.

The AFC North has produced 3 teams with 5 wins or less since 2017.

The AFC West has produced 3 WC teams since 2017.

The AFC West has produced 6 teams with 5 wins or less since 2017.

The AFC South has produced 4 WC teams since 2017.

The AFC South has produced 6 teams with 5 wins or less since 2017.

What is the argument that the AFC East has sucked any more than the West or South?

Not being the AFCN?

Unlike the AFC South that has started luminaries like Will Levis, Sam Ehlinger, Matt Ryan’s corpse, Davis Mills, Kyle Allen, Jeff Driskel?

The chargers would have been winning the AFCE at the same rate as the bills would be my wager

Chargers had the 29th ranked defense in points in 2022 when Herby was last fully healthy. Come on bro

The guy couldn't tell the difference between a team and a division😂😂

iirc he was the same one who said we have 'no elite talent on defense' while maintaining Ed Oliver is just a little below Chris Jones and Aaron Donald

True, but the AFC East has been dreadful where the AFC North is a bloodbath.

The AFCE isn't the AFCN, true, but dreadful overstates in. In the Bills four division winning seasons three times the AFCE has sent two teams to the postseason. I don't think dreadful is fair.

I keep searching for “the AFCE is a gauntlet.”

I don’t see it.

Feel free to help me keep up.

So the choice is to gaslight yourself?

Is it gaslighting ourselves to think that the team we are a fan of, that has been inarguably a top 5 team in the NFL for three straight seasons, will probably continue to be very good?  Why should we believe otherwise?

Here are McDermott's playoff games:

2023
Win against Pittsburgh: 37-17

Loss to Chiefs: 24-27

2022

Win against Dolphins: 34-31
Loss to Bengals: 10-27

2021

Win vs. Pats: 47-17

Loss to Chiefs: 36-42

2020

Win vs. Colts: 27-24

Win vs. Ravens: 17-3

Loss vs. Chiefs: 24-38

2019

Loss vs. Texans: 19-22

2017

Loss vs. Jags: 3-10

For a defensive specialist, I don't see too many games where he shut down a top-end QB in the playoffs. Maybe Lamar (though many would argue that he's not elite). I'll take that as one well-coached defensive game in McD's playoff tenure. Holding Watson to 22 points sounds ok but Watson was 20/25 for 247 yards so not really great pass D.

Someone please point me to where McDermott has consistently had good results limiting better than average QBs in the playoffs. I'm tired of hearing about how great we are in the regular season — I want to see meaning results — superior defensive coaching in the playoffs.

Excellent post. One thing I'll add is this. There are two Lamar Jacksons. Lamar the passer, and Lamar the runner. Lamar the passer is nothing special. Lamar the runner is elite.

To their credit, McDermott and Frazier came up with a very good defensive game plan for Lamar Jackson. Make him be a quarterback. Don't allow Lamar the runner to bail out Lamar the passer.

But, when a QB is a gifted passer, and when he's facing the Bills in a postseason game, he's going to cut through the MCDermott/Frazier defense like a hot knife through butter. Zero exceptions to that rule, at least thus far.
