I'm really starting to love this WR room. We quietly got better

Recommended Posts

Josh Allen targeted 11 different players.

Coleman had 5 targets, the most on the team last night.

JA threw to who was open and not who had the biggest hype or the biggest name on the team.

This team is not predictable because of it. The field is bigger for JA now.

JA is going through his read properly now.

You can see the difference.

It was 2nd and Goal from the 6, he absolutely could have slid or taken less contact for a lower TD chance.  I don't get why you and others are acting like it was a do-or-die 4th down play.  He chooses to do this stuff.  I'm not complaining, but the offense can absolutely function without him setting himself up for big impacts.

And if he slides it becomes 3rd and goal from the 4.  Then it's 4th and goal from the 3 and we kick a FG to go up 27 - 20.  At this point the last Cards drive only needs a FG to win the game 31 - 30.

So yea, IMO he had to hurtle and score that TD which should have locked the game up.  The problem is that the ST then allowed a 98 yard TD KO return.  So the real issue isn't Allen putting his body on the line but how a Bills unit, through gross ineptness, almost wasted Allen's effort. This has happened to often over the last few seasons.

Absolutely.  It's going to be interesting to see how this progresses.

As for JA running.  We all hold our breathe every time he runs but that's just who he is.  He's all in, all the time.

The Other Side Hello GIF

Ha all kidding aside...it's just one game, lot of football left and lot more for this offense to prove.  But still, a lot to like from week 1.

Shakir did some great stuff and Coleman may bring an element we haven't had on this team in some time.  Definitely some nice positives.  Tough to game plan against us.

Yeah, that is where I think a lot of people have missed about this group who have been down on it.  Brady can create a lot of mismatches and different looks with this group, including athletic size with just about any formation compared to previously just really 12 personnel.  Still, it's week 1 and 5 or 6 weeks from now DC's will have a lot more film on this offense, so we need to see they can consistently do this kind of thing and adjust when say some things aren't working.

Not gonna get out over the ski's here, but week 1 was exactly what I expected from the offense after they preached all summer that everyone eats.

2 things I want them to clean up though ASAP are the penalties (hopefully just some rust) and how Josh Allen was carrying the football Sunday, it was like a loaf of bread out there.  With how physical he runs, he needs to be more protective with the ball instead of carrying it out there just palming it or fumbles are going to be an issue again.  It looked like his first couple years again with how he was holding it.

Better than dealing with Diggs nonsense....

"It's gratifying when they trust you in big moments"

W H A T?  Since when is week 1 a big moment????

Dude got the first play against KC and fumbled.  Also had the most pivotal play in the game and dropped it.

Meanwhile, Diggs' "nonsense"

2 TD's...good for him.   Playoff No Show in almost all his games as a Bill

Josh didn't have to force feed him / throw into double coverage.  Diggs does not jump for fight for the football.

Why would you say things that have never been true when anyone can just look up that you're completely incorrect?

Diggs played in 9 postseason games for the Bills. He had 3 monster games, 3 solid games and 3 duds: https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/D/DiggSt00/gamelog/post/

Tyreek hill, considered by many to be the best WR in the league has only had 4 monster games across 15 total playoff games vs 14 for Diggs. Adams had 4 across 11 games with 2 real stinkers in playoff loses.  WRs don't dominate every game against elite competition.

As for Digg's "does not jump or fight for the football" - laughably untrue. When he had weaker QB play, he was considered a contested catch specialist. He was #1 in the league in 2017 and #2 in 2018, in 2020 he led the league in catches against single coverage with 58. As of now, he has the most receptions in the league since 2020. It's like you guys developed complete amnesia that he was one of the top WRs in the NFL after one dropped pass. It's insane.

As others have pointed out, the issue is that Josh Allen had to take a lot of physical punishment today, just to beat a below average team with a bad defense. If he doesn't put his body on the line today (which literally caused an injury, the severity of which is still unknown) we would have lost. I guess this year they aren't putting the leash on him early in the season like they have in previous years. He has free reign to run around and take hits, because they know it's the only way this team can move the ball and score enough points to cover up our numerous deficiencies in all three phases. We don't have any pass catcher that can just go out and beat their man 1v1 with any kind of consistency. So it falls on Josh, like it always does but even moreso than usual.

So yeah we should care that we don't have anyone on offense capable of taking the load off of his shoulders. But hey for today at least the pass catchers all played their respective roles and did enough to get the job done. It is encouraging that the group wasn't a total trainwreck. Still there are concerning signs that I'm not going to ignore because we scored 34 points.

... you... are... stretching...

Allens first rushing TD was a designed run. His second, in which he sustained the injury, was on second down. But, you're arguing that play, on second down, was the only way we win the game???  Come on now!

And our receivers weren't consistent? Our #1, #2, #3, and #4 WRs (in whichever order you want to place them) were collectively 11/12 receiving. That's a 92% completion rate. Cooke was 3/3. Allen's completion rate was 72%. All this in a game where the offense barely saw the field in the first half, and Allen passed (I think it was) twice before the halftime two minute warning? I don't know how you come away from that game complaining that the receivers weren't consistent?

Why don't the wins matter?

Not when you don’t have enough of them and keep going home early.

Think I care about stats against a lowly NE team, a Miami team with a bad defense and 3rd string QB in the first rounds?  No, not in the slightest.

I care about the big games against the teams that keep sending us home and keep us from reaching a Super Bowl.

We definitely got better at WR blocking.  Hollins and Coleman eliminated their guys from the play.  Hollins dude got moved and Coleman shoved his guy 3 yards back and he gave up

this was part of their plan.

no Kincaid, no samuel, very little shakir and we still had a solid offensive day.  We’ll see how they do against a real defense though
