Bad Things
Hmmm... Rochester is where I was born and raised. I have family and friends there, so please trust me when I say that I'm proud to be from there and loved being raised there, and am not trying to crap on it. (Although I would never move back.) That said, if an area is continuously mentioned in these "most affordable" lists... is that really a good thing? Why is it considered so affordable? Is it because many people would rather live somewhere else, making the "more desirable" places more unaffordable? That said... Go Amerks! Sweats
I was in Rochester for a weekend long convention a number of years back........after 8pm, i didn't see one soul walking outside at all. Like, i'm talking no one. I didn't see any cars driving, no one walking down the streets, no hobos or bums, no street ladies, nothing. It was all hustle and bustle during the day, but when it started to get a little dark out, it's like everyone ran for cover. I mean, i walked around at night and didn't feel like anything was dangerous or ever seemed out of place, just that the place turned into a ghost town. Is it really that dead downtown Rochester at night or is there crime which drives everyone away?

This was a number of years ago and it was as far as i am aware, right downtown at the convention center (i'd never be able to point it out on a map nowadays) and i think i stayed at the Hyatt......I know the hotel was right across the street from the convention center. I ate dinner at the hotel (it could have been Mortons at the time) and decided to go for a walk downtown scouting for bars. I saw a lot of shops, a lot of boarded up shops and no bars. There was a coffee place that was open until 8pm, then they shut down and the whole place looked like something out of "I Am Legend". I didn't even see a cab so i could get the guy to take me to a hot spot.......nothing. I ended up back at the hotel, just hanging out. It was boring as hell. This was before cell phones and the internet, so it's not like i could just look something up and go where the action was. I couldn't even ask anybody on the street where to go cause i didn't see anyone. I remember asking the concierge at the hotel about anywhere in town to hang out and she said, "trust me, you're better off hanging out at the hotel".......and it was a long, boring weekend.
