I'm not a hundo percent on this one, so someone please double check me here (tips welcome), but I've heard that the US is one of the few countries that actually participate in the practice of tipping.

True, but it's bothering me that instead of America becoming like the rest of the world and eliminating tipping, much of the rest of the world is becoming more like America. Tipping used to be so unheard of in parts of Europe that the waiter/barman would assume you left money on the table by mistake and would try to give it back to you. Not anymore. It started innocently enough with the "leave the change (coins) on the table as a small token of appreciation ..."

At all inclusive resorts, it's supposedly forbidden.  You get much better service for throwing  a few bucks tho and the staff are paid a pittance at most of these.  Best solution would be to just pay everyone a living wage but we know that's not going happen.  o this idea is great IF the workers get to keep their tips.

I agree.  I think it's a pretty shady shady tactic and only helps the business owner.  It's just stupid and make no logical sense.  The price of an item should be the price of an item, plain and simple.

Spot on. I especially hate the default tip screen on the Toast registers that make you add an extra 20% when all they did was turn around and pour a coffee in a cup.

Or pick up food from a pizzeria.  You cooked it, then put it in a box.  You get nothing, good day sir.

Maybe lawfare victim Trump will propose something really crazy like "forgiving" student loan debt.

Oh wait...

I was talking with friends at a restaurant last night. Let's say the check is $500. We would typically tip 20% or so. So that's $100. The server would net maybe $80 if she's in a 20% tax bracket.

No tax on tips? She'd net the full $100. So should we reduce the percent we're tipping to take that into account?

Oh geez, the law firm of Frankish, Spankems, & Hard PC is gearing up for the class action lawsuit.  Here's my answer as a man of the people:

We already know in your example above, one of your tipsy law school buddies said something completely inappropriate to this server, you've been firing down the Johnny Walker Blue at an alarming rate,  that you and your good time buddied split a couple of appetizers, that 80% of the 100% is for liquor and now you're trying to carve 20% of the 100% you were previously going to tip.

Loosen up. Tip the lady like what she does matters.  And lay off the sauce, boyo.

Actually we were thinking about quitting our law jobs and becoming waiters.

Or maybe putting a tip jar on the counsel tables.

Go with the second option, I'm sure you'll get lots of good stuff in the jar.

Yeah, on second thought, I'm just gonna get one of those iPads where I swivel the screen to the defendant: 18%, 22%, 25%

I am not in favor of this because some of the waiters at Disney make well into 6 figures, with the majority being tips. One guy in particular, who I have not seen in a decade, told me was pulling down $100 an hour with tips at the flying fish in 2012. I assume that number could be $120-$150 an hour now, meaning they are making $200k a year. With that being said the IRS is so incompetent it is immoral to expect a person making $25k a year to keep track of all their tip money so I guess this is the only option.
