Uninspiring Centrism leads to dissatisfaction which leads to the rise of right wing parties. Winning the election is one thing, they’ve got to actually *do* something to keep voters from flirting with authoritarian right wing parties. IMO, right wing populism is more appealing than left wing populism because it’s easy to understand - “I don’t like you, so I will put this person in power that will stomp you out” whereas left wing populism requires you to read 97 different texts from people who died 200 years ago to have the slightest understanding of their goals. It’s easier to just find an unpopular group, and scapegoat them as the “other” who is the cause of everyone’s problems. Of course, governing is a whole other beast. The left pushed so far on both of these issues that you now have a majority of Americans (and seems a similar sentiment in Europe) in favor of straight up mass deportations. It turns out open-minded people have their limits.. and when people pouring into their country have no desire to assimilate, they realize that their country is no longer a melting pot.. it’s simply becoming a welfare state for people who want to import their culture to supersede theirs. The Socialist party appears to have won a healthy majority in Denmark, too. France did an atrocious job with assimilating immigrants. European countries don’t have the institutions like we do to assimilate them.
