Joe Marino talks what the Bills have to do to beat KC in playoffs

Recommended Posts

I like Joe a lot. Wish his podcast had film and more graphics but I think he knows a lot and like to listen often. Didn't see this here and I thought it merited some attention.

What he says here is interesting, and his conclusion may not please a lot of folks here.

Some broad highlights:
1. Recapping the obvious: the Bills play the Chiefs very well in the regular season, in the post-season, not so much

2. As good as Mahomes is, his QB rating against the Bills in the playoffs is far, far higher than against other teams. I roughly recall a 20-point difference or so.

3. The Chiefs have been very good at letting good players go at the right time

4. Mahomes will obviously be good for a long time, and Jones for a while still, but hopefully a 35-year-old Kelce starts to decline

5. This is the big one — the Bills can't just "out score" the Chiefs in the playoffs, we have to get D line pressure on Mahomes, who might have been sacked just 3 times (if I recall) in 3 playoff games against the Bills.

Joe says this last point is key: pressure that actually gets to Mahomes in the playoffs. Other teams sack him; we don't. He's not invincible but the Bills falter — in the playoffs — getting to Pat.

Joe doesn't get to breaking down what we've been doing wrong and what we can do better but he doesn't think the key is simply getting better on offense. And he points out that Josh always comes to play against KC in the playoffs.

Keep arguing all you want about Bills WRs but the Bills D-line is a big question mark, if not concern, when it comes to stopping our nemesis when it counts.

Beat the crap outta Mrs. Swift, and get an actual pass rush out of our front 4.

This isn't rocket surgery.  Bottom line beane has failed on the DL.  Not one pure stud among them and no, Oliver isn't a stud.  Show up in the playoffs and have a significant impact.

Yep...since the day Josh was drafted, the Bills have failed miserably in finding an elite pass rusher. Just a whole bunch of tier 2 and tier 3 Jags and a HOFer who probably had a career ending injury.

We have to fire McDermott.

At what point do Bills fans come to the conclusion that we will NEVER beat an Andy Reid team in the playoffs with McDermott at the helm ?

I'm very sorry

People said the same thing about Andy Reid in Philadelphia LOL and he's not a different coach

Sometimes it takes years and years to build the team... Andy Reid has had 11 years building his team in Kansas City.. Sean McDermott has had 7 years

Andy Reid went to a franchise that was actually good in the 5 or 10 years prior at points.. McDermott took over a team that won 17 years with no postseason

Worst drought in sports

Patrick mahomes worst record against any franchise is the Buffalo Bills

We certainly can beat them anytime any day it just hasn't felt that way.. like wide right or 13 seconds

We're not far away from beating them and we absolutely can win super bowls

Yeah the D-Line in the Playoffs has been a constant issue with this team.  If you can't disrupt an opposing QB's time spent in the pocket in the playoffs you are not going to fare well in the playoffs.  We just don't have a player of that caliber on this team and haven't in a long, long time.

And now to the ghost, of Von Miller who occupies a spot on this teams DL and is seen occasionally now and then,  and although I do believe in ghosts, this particular ghost scares no one!!!!

The issue with the Andy Reid comparison is  Andy Reid didn't have Patrick Mahomes in Philly.

Mahomes helped put him over the top in KC

McDermott has Josh Allen and Josh Allen has excelled in the playoffs.

It comes back to McDermotts defence not performing or major coaching gaffes in critical times. (13 seconds)

Reid had Donovan McNabb who was a pro bowl quarterback and has been nominated for the hof... Easily good enough to win a super bowl.. better than Nick foles who won for the eagles

Might not be a top 15 quarterback of all time

Donovan McNabb was really f****** good... Would have easily been in the top two quarterbacks in Buffalo history in 60 years

We're talking about a top pick who is mobile strong Cannon and a winner... He is one of the most underrated quarterbacks

Was Mcnabb really that good though or did Andy Reid get the best out of him?

When Mcnabb left Philly, he was hot trash for the rest of his career.

I get he was at the tail end of his career but he was 33-34 when he left. That's really not that old for a QB

Mahomes has a 105 passer rating in the playoffs. He has a 120 passer rating against the Bills in the playoffs. Clearly he plays the Bills much better than other teams.

Meanwhile, Mahomes has a passer rating of like 85 against the Bills in the regular season.

I think the key is that the defense has been decimated by injuries, and the effectiveness of some of the players who were playing was hampered by injuries as well.

I think the big reason the Bills have been better in the regular season is because they were healthier at the time. And it isn't that surprising that the Chiefs are more focused and bringing it more in the playoffs. Certainly.

But if you look at the list of names of players missing on defense in those elimination games, it makes sense. Maybe it is a cop out, but it is silly to think that defensive injuries hasn't been a major factor.

Two to three more playoff losses to them, in my estimation

Umm unless your name is Tom Brady plenty of quarterbacks fall off at 33 or 34 lmao especially back in the day when you are allowed to punish quarterbacks

Including our own Jim Kelly

Donovan McNabb was really f****** good... 35,000 yards , 230 touchdowns

Strong , mobile.. and a winner... This is Ludacris that people try to downplay Donovan McNabb

Plenty of QBs still elite at 34.

Rivers, Big Ben, staffford still good, favre, manning, Rodgers

Endless examples.

Ok another example look at Alex smith: Andy Reid helped him get to pro bowls.

Look at his career outside of the Andy Reid years

How much longer does his credit line for backdooring a wildcard loss extend?

And we are very far from beating either them or the Bengals in the playoffs. We are not in the same class come postseason

He entered the league before Alex Smith and rivers and Stafford and Rodgers lol you can murder quarterbacks in 1999 and 2000 and 2001 and 2002 and 2003

You're literally just grabbing a couple of people... And thinking every quarterback plays great til they are 37 lol

Jim Kelly is a Hall of famer and fell off of a cliff at 34...

Donovan McNabb was really good no matter what you think... There's a reason he's on the Hall of Fame ballot every year as a nominee

You have the opinion that obviously if you're not a top five All pro you suck..  because you can't say 230 touchdowns... 37,000 yards.. led the league in yards twice..  let the league in interception percentage... First quarterback ever with 30 touchdowns and less than 10 interceptions in a season

Philadelphia eagles leader in passing yards and touchdowns...

Fifth all time in rushing yards for a quarterback

I could keep going on he was really good
