He was 225 during freshman football. He's still roughly 225 now after throwing shot for indoor, and he's throwing shot for outdoor also. He's a leaner 225 than he was in the fall and he's significantly stronger. He's been able to lift all the way through and not have to cut weight for anything and he's had less wear and tear overall and no injuries. By the fall he will have at least another 10-15 on board and repeat the process. The goal of him being bigger next year than last year, not just churning the same 25 pounds back and forth season to season. The yo-yoing weight isnt good for you anyway, nor are all the things kids do to make weight. You're also talking about a kid who was a state champion swimmer at age 12 who got fat shamed out of the sport by his coach (who is also his high school's coach) because he's not shaped like a traditional swimmer. Fast forward 2.5 years and he's not a chubby little kid anymore and if he were still in the pool he'd be slaughtering people. IMO he doesn't need another sport that's going to start off by immediately putting him on a scale and telling him to weigh less because that is exactly what would happen. Football is great for him and it's why he likes it. In his own words, "At swim I constantly got crap for being big, at football I get praised for it." Swimming is ridiculous. And body shaming is awful. Their is being doughy and soft and there is simply being thick and big bones. Disirregardless, a lot of kids have an insanely high BMI that are not fit not active enough. I'm sorry he went through that. Gymnastics and swimming/diving body shaming are horrible. 9 minutes ago, That's No Moon said: And all of that is exactly what I'm trying to avoid with a 15 year old. Oh, and I didn't have to fight to make weight or avoid foods etc. no one ever pressured me. Anything. It was on me. Only a few times did have a problem with weighing in that I had to go to extremes. Once I was allowed to skip a day of school by the teachers/staff to run in bags on the treadmill. But my diet would naturally change. My body is torn to shreds from 30 years of abuse. I'd not trade any of it despite being 43 with moderate to severe arthritis in both knees, arthritis in my hands, 2 ruptured discs, a few bulging thoracic discs, foot drop/weakness, and to be diagnosed via MRI hip issues. I still do everything I've always done. I'm dumb. Quote

You are correct, but I had the BMI conversation about my other kid who played hockey 6 days a week and had a resting heart rate of 53. He's be sitting in the doctor's office with his shirt off obviously in amazing shape but had to have the talk every year because the height/weight math didn't add up. Whaddya gonna do? Quote

Whaddya gonna do? the BMI is tricky for athletes, especially teenage athletes but the body isn't really meant to exceed 200# - the heart and structure doesn't know the difference between muscle and bone (very broad statement and in laymen terms). it has its place for health input. one of my favorites was Lance armstrong had a higher Resting HR than Bush. My parents forbid me from wrestling, due to not being that big of a person plus the likelihood of having to cut weight. I did dabble in boxing after high school (Singer's Gym) and it was eye opening. Three minutes is an eternity in a boxing ring. 58 minutes ago, boyst said: one of my favorites was Lance armstrong had a higher Resting HR than Bush.
