When you think about it, it's long overdue since the reason the ***** Leaguess existed only was because African Americans were barred from MLB.  The best players in the ***** Leagues were every bit as good as the best players in the National and American Leagues.

Was the law of the land for 60 years.

 

"Separate but equal" started with "Plessy" in 1896 and ended with "Brown" in 1954 with "Separate is inherently unequal."  

 

It really took 70 years to integrate the stats, a decade longer than Jim Crow! You gotta be kidding!

Agreed and many of them proved it when they made it to MLB and continued to destroy the competition!

How are they handling seasonal records like highest average?  Jimmie Foxx, Joe DiMaggio, etc.  lose their spot?

 

Personally I can see a lot of ways to make stats count but far more important IMO is telling the stories of these players and have them regarded in the ways they deserve. Babe Ruth shouldn’t and doesn’t have to become supplanted for Josh Gibson to get the recognition he richly deserves.  
 

Bob Kendrick is a great ambassador and I’ve love to see him become more well known.  There isn’t a lot of video of Ruth, Gehrig, Hornsby, etc and even less of Bell and Gibson.  We need the stories told.  Segregation is an important part of the story but not all of it.  The pure baseball part is too.

There is an old legend about babe and Josh Gibson having a home run derby in Puerto Rico or Cuba in the late 30s 

 

Never been fully confirmed and probably never happened

Why would you think that the Negr0 Leagues' history would be "erased"?  There are 37 members of the Negr0 Leagues in the Baseball HOF, only three of them having played in National or American Leagues, so the Negr0 Leagues are considered on a level with the "major leagues" during the Jim Crow era.   There is also the Negr0 Leagues Baseball Museum in Kansas City.

So the Hall of Fame is not the MLB hall of fame its the Baseball Hall of Fame. The ***** Hall of Fame is separate from the MLB. My point is the MLB kept them out of baseball and is now using their records. Has the MLB apologized for their role in that?  Just putting their records in the books isn't an apology.

He was on the game tonight honoring the ***** leagues. What an uplifting individual. There were a lot of moving moments throughout the broadcast, it was a great tribute. This game should be an annual event.

 

But, needless to say, it can never be enough.

 

On a side note, it didn’t dawn on me who Josh Gibson topped as the all time batting average leader until they said it during the broadcast. In a sad case of irony, Gibson passed the immortalized Ty Cobb, whose past is abhorrent, to say the least, regarding racist behavior.

I watched the Giants/Cards game, too.   One of the interesting things that Kendricks said was that the MLB video game started adding Negr0 Leagues players in the 2023 edition, so that many younger kids had learned about players from the Negr0 Leagues through the game.  He also talked about plans to expand the Negr0 Leagues HOF in Kansas City.

He hops around and does one or two inning guest stints on teams broadcasts promoting the museum a bit but mostly just telling stories.  Having the MLB version of Sunday ticket means hearing him a bunch.  Of course he will say the same things sometimes because he wants people in Detroit to hear what people in Seattle hear, but he mixes things up a lot too.  The museum seems like a must…despite being in KC.

 

He does a lot of Royals games of course and because they’ve had him so many times he goes into more stories with that broadcast team.  He’s great every time.

 

As bad a segregation was in baseball, that’s nothing compared to segregation in society as a whole.  We can’t change the past but we can learn from it if we decide to listen.  There is no magic wand to change the past or right the wrongs despite well meaning people wishing for it, a small minority of creeps wanting to use it to go back, and charlatans profiting from the desire for it.  Yet again, baseball is somehow an incredible forum by which history can be taught.  That little speech by James Earl Jones in Field of Dreams is accurate.  Knowing the stories is the closest thing we can get to that magic wand.

 

Selfishly, I enjoy hearing all these new baseball stories and knowing they won’t all be lost.  Still, there are many stories that are lost, not just from this league but from MLB as well.  Maybe knowing that a lot are lost to history makes us appreciate the ones we have.  It should.

Who currently that works for the MLB was responsible for that and why should anyone that wasn’t apologize?

The law of the land kept them out. Not the MLB.  Segregation became official policy enforced by Southern law.

the mlb could absolutely have let them in. Jackie came in the mlb in 1947. Segregation was still the law after that.
