Yes, having the merge point marked is important.  It was clearly marked with multiple signage

It's not well-publicized but the absolute mess created by the post-pandemic push to license more CDL drivers is wild. Not sure if the pattern started pre-pandemic or not but the last few years I'm pretty sure I've seen more fatals involving large trucks than I did before.
