billieve420 Posted May 14 Posted May 14 Is Parry also gonna advise McDermott on when to call timeouts as well? As I have bigger issue with his timeout usage compared to the challenges. However, this seems like a no risk move so good to see them looking at all available options to improve. Quote
LABILLBACKER Posted May 14 Posted May 14 Now if we could just get Kemp, Hussey & Hochuli on payroll.....Lombardi! Quote

This will help the coaches understand why calls were made to help prep the team better. 3. Parry comes with knowledge of other ref tendencies. Who likes to call what and who lets things slide. 4. Parry getting a cushy gig with the Bills will hopefully get officialls to go easier on the Bills knowing one of their own is being taken care of (yes pure unadulterated speculation but the world is not what you know but who you know). I see zero negative to this hire and only positives. What a forward thinking move by the Bills! We're at our usual ratio of one good post per every 4 pages. Thank you @section122 for the one good post. Agree with all of the above and would have made the same arguments had you not posted. All of your points are excellent. To point number one, of course Parry will have involvement in training camp and practices. Why would they pay him as an officiating/game management coach and not have him do so????? To point number two, of course he'll advise the coaches on officiating nuances which can be taught to the players. And of course he'll know the tendencies of the various officials and crews and of course his hiring will generally play positively in the officiating community. And yes, there is zero downside... which makes you wonder why anyone would have a negative view of this hire. The Bills have just done something that makes total sense... and that no other NFL team has done before... to a generally lukewarm and negative response here. Other points to consider: In 2020, the Bills hired Marc Lubick as their Game Management Coach. You think that maybe Parry will be assisting Lubick in these duties? Half of all NFL games are decided by 7 points or less. You think maybe that Parry's hire might have a generally positive effect on game outcomes? 3 Quote
T master Posted May 14 Posted May 14 This is just 1 more reason the Bills kept McD on as their HC despite all the uproar here by the so called football Fan experts that say he needs to be gone . McD is always looking for ways to improve the over out put of the team & coaching as a hole & this is just 1 more way he proves his worth as the Bills HC . Quote

The only risk is running out of challenges - but go ahead and take a guess at how many times McDermott has had 2 challenges in one game in his entire 7 year Bills career. I'll guess: 1 time. What's the answer? Quote
stevewin Posted May 14 Posted May 14 If this does become a trend, between this 'job' and being the 'football rules analyst' on game broadcasts, being an ex-ref is the sweetest gig in the world. Quote
boyst Posted May 14 Posted May 14 I am hoping his assignment includes scouting the upcoming referees for games in tendencies, opportunities, etc. 2 Quote
NoHuddleKelly12 Posted May 14 Posted May 14 I guess this means Pegula is still willing to spend $$$ on the Bills after all! 🤓 Quote

To your point about assisting with coaching rules nuances to the players, don’t forget we are about to usher in yet another new era on D with having to comport with the new hip drop tackling prohibition…you almost have to have a dedicated rules official on staff just to keep up with all the yearly changes. Love this move by the Bills. 1 Quote
Einstein Posted May 14 Author Posted May 14 3 hours ago, Cash said: I'll guess: 1 time. What's the answer? The Chiefs playoff game a couple months ago was the first time McD has challenged twice in one game since 2019. One time... in 4 seasons. He rarely ever challenges. He challenged 6 total times last season (in 19 games). And he has only challenged 33 times ever in his 125 games coached for the Bills. Challenging twice in 1 game? Pfft. Better chance of getting struck by lightning. So IF he was ever burning timeouts as to avoid wasting a challenge, that is monumentally stupid. Not only does it create the potential of you losing two (2) timeouts if you end up losing the eventual challenge, but it also means that he wasn't aware of his own pattern of rarely ever challenging twice in one game (or even once!) 1 Quote
