Did we do enough at wide receiver? Definitely not.

But there also wasn't much they could do, so it's not like I'm upset about it either.

The only real surprise was drafting just 1 WR and leaving it at that. In a deep WR class, surely you'd think they'd try their hands at multiple guys, but nope.

Hopefully that doesn't come back to bite them in the ass. Again, I don't think there was much else they could've done though.

So we had agreed that the Bills passing game was not good enough in 2023 and running the ball 9.2 times per game was putting hard miles on Josh Allen........and now we are hoping they get back to "not good enough".

And ignoring the fact that the NFL is a matchup league.

"Yeah,  we don't need Ted Washington in the middle........we can just stop the run with numbers!"

That lasted about 2 quarters into game one of the Gregg Williams regime before it became obvious that they had made a serious mistake in judgement going into the season with that "aggregate" mindset in a matchup league.

Who in this re-aligned Bills receiving corps is beating a good CB1?    I saw someone photoshop Sauce Gardner into that pic of Keon Coleman making the one-handed grab against Syracuse.   Yeah, that ain't happening in real life.   That means the defense can then double whoever the Bills view as WR1.   But they won't need to because the Bills don't have one of those.

You aren't beating the defense with numbers........it's still 11 on 11.  You gotta' win matchups.

Last year it was "we'll have a #2 by committee!" Now it's "we'll have a #1 by committee!" We've gone backwards from an already less than ideal position. So yeah the passing offense is pretty clearly going to take a step back this year. Are we going to produce an elite run game to make up even part of that step back? Is our less experienced defense going to carry the offense the way the Chiefs defense did last season? I just don't see it happening this year. Not unless several best case scenarios regarding player development come to fruition and/or the coaching staff performs a lot better than they have.

There will be one more move made after June 1.

I hope so. I don't want to believe Mack Hollins/Justin Shorter is the plan. We literally don't have two starting caliber outside WRs on the roster. It feels like DJ Chark or OBJ have to be a post-6/1 signing just so we have a capable starting roster heading into training camp.

DJ Chark signed a one-year $5M contract with Carolina last season.

His stock did not rise.  I think he will sign for similar (or even less) money this season.

I'd feel better having him in camp.

I don't see a big-name WR trade coming to Buffalo.

Top 4 WR rotation:

Samuel

Shakir

Chark

Coleman

The rest fighting for the other 2 roster spots would be good for me.

Trade for Terrace Marshall as our 4th WR.

I see this idea a lot but honestly I don't want low probability upside, I want a known floor. Chark or OBJ would suit our needs better IMO. Marshall is someone that a non-contending team should take a shot on.

So you don't believe Samuel and Coleman can start outside? I know Samuel has played a lot inside but he's played some outside and Keon is a rookie but it seems like that's the plan. At least, I don't know of any other way to read what Beane has done.

We can't have a team full of slot specialists, can we?

Getting over the top will require the Bills defense to stop Mahomes at some point.

This really is a completely different topic though. Many believe WRs is how you beat Mahomes. I still believe it’s front 4 pressure making at least a couple plays late in games to stop Mahomes. The Bengals beat Mahomes because of the defense. The Bucs beat Mahomes because of the defense.

We got Von to try and apply pressure to beat Mahomes. It's just not that simple. He's too good.

This last try, it was Kelce catching all over us, Pacheco running all over us, and the D letting KC score 27. Hopefully the D will be more stout with less LB injuries this year. But it was also our inability to close it out in the clutch.  Part of that, imho, was a lack of potency in the passing game. We couldn't get that critical TD when we needed it.  Josh threw 39 times and only got 186 yds.

As much as Josh can still do it, we need to start to find alternatives to his playmaking with his legs. It makes up for, and even masks, other deficiencies. He was our leading rusher that game. How many times has he bailed out our lack of a real system or plan, with some crazy individual feat? He won't be able to keep up his whole career.

Marshall is perfect. 1 year at a low cap hit. Young, fast, has started games. Chark and OBJ want targets and snaps. I don’t know if I want them taking snaps from Shakir, Samuel, or Coleman.

Coleman is the one WR I was referring to. He's the only one on the roster that I believe you can plant outside full time and make it work, and depending on who you ask a lot of people don't even think that's true.

Samuel is not a full time outside WR. That's what I'm talking about. You need a minimum of two WRs on the roster that can be planted outside full time if for no other reason than to protect against injury if the #1 outside WR gets injured.

So right now our only possible starting caliber full time outside WR is a raw rookie, and that's assuming he's immediately good enough to start and not better in the slot like some analysts believe. It's a terrible situation to enter the season with. It's in fact so terrible that I'm going to assume there is a post-6/1 plan in place. There's just no way Mack Hollins is the plan. I won't believe that.

He was a healthy scratch for like five consecutive games last year. I'm struggling to think of a single WR that went from that kind of resume in their 3rd season to finding success elsewhere. I would put him in the same caliber as Justin Shorter. Sure bring him to training camp for a swap of 7th rounders but there would be zero expectation of him giving meaningful contributions to the team.

I don't worry about any WR "taking snaps" from someone else on the roster. I just want a good depth chart with a solid floor heading into the season. The snaps and targets will figure themselves out.

If Samuel can't play outside full time it was pretty dumb to give him that contract (as opposed to spending it on a true outside guy) when we have Shakir and Kincaid.

I see where you and others are coming from. I'm hoping it works out because getting worked up about it is futile.

He can play outside some, just not full time. He is a better outside WR than Shakir for example. But anyways Samuel isn't going to be a traditional WR in our offense, those are the exact words Beane used to decribe him. He's the plus plus version of McKenzie/Harty. And I really liked that signing, I think he gives us a reliable X-factor that we've never had in the Josh Allen era. I'm just not looking at him as more than what he is.

It's really hard to imagine us not adding an outside WR post-June 1

The Beane smokescreen about liking Shorter and Shavers (I couldn't even remember who he was), is just that, classic Beane white lie.
We need a proven outside WR vet, at the very least to show the ropes to Coleman and offer some depth.

Gabe Davis was a non factor dropping the ball machine. Addition by subtraction. Keon is a stud pass catching machine. Kincaid is stud. Kahlil is a stud. We are fine. If Beane adds another good WR its gravy. I would cut Knox and get another pass catching TE. Diggs dropped the ball too much as well. His pass catch ratio was around 61%, that nis too low. Keons ratio is around 91 %.
