If the player is good enough to warrant it, teams usually will extend them before that. If they are not, they just decline it. The only time that it comes into play is when guys are on the line of being good enough, like Tua. Edmunds was another one. It's tough too as you need to pick up the 5th year option after the player has only completed his 3rd year. Wouldn't be shocked if the Bills had wished like in the old days to rescind Edmunds option after seeing his play in year 4, but can't do that anymore. So they let him play it out, maybe were hoping for a huge improvement, but it never came, so let him walk. Quote

If the player is a franchise QB, he gets extended after year 3, like Josh and many others. Only the QBs who have an injury history get the 5th year option. Meanwhile, the QB busts get jettisoned. Look at 2021: 4 QBs in the top 15 got dumped before the team even had to consider the 5th year option. Not really. Just about all of the franchise QBs have their 5th year option picked up. The extensions signed in year 3 get put on AFTER the 5th. Josh and Mahomes (as examples) had 5th year options picked up. Quote

He is an incomplete receiver, a niche player, and not what the Bills needed. He may end up being more than that, but chances are far greater in my mind that he gets added to the pile of speed demons in NFL history who never grow beyond their gadget role. He will make some plays for KC, but I would be surprised if he rises above role player. 1 Quote

Only when they've missed significant time like Lamar Jackson is a QB left hanging by an organization that wants him. Quote
