Shameless bump for me and those who also believed, and I don’t even care.  He’s a beast.  I’ve been saying it since he was drafted, long before I started this thread back in April…this dude just has it.

Allen has 100% completion rate on something like his last 34 pass attempts to Shakir.

BEAST.  Love watching him play.

Are they monster hits though? I feel like part of his skill set is taking them in a way that allows him to shed right off. I wonder if it’s like a top level pad drill for him the way he pinballs

Midseason check in and an obligatory shout out to Shakir coming off another excellent game :) Now back on a 1000+ yard pace again.

After setting the NFL record for most targets in a row with a completion already earlier this year (29) he has now caught 50 of his last 52 targets which is just insane efficiency.

Despite missing a game, Shakir ranks are:

  • Yards - 21st - 421 yds
  • YAC Yards - 5th - 300 yds

Some other ranks:

  • YAC per Rec - 7th - 6.8 yds
  • Catch % - 1st - 94.4%

Now factor in the first 3 weeks too:  Week 1 - Allen only had 2 pass attempts up until the final 2 min of the first half and finished with 18 completions to 9 different guys.  Week 2 - Was the Cook show and offense took a vacation second half with Allen only passing for 140 yards in a blow out win.  Week 3 - Josh completes passes to 10 different receivers in another blow out win where offense takes the 2nd half off.

So he has missed one game, was limited in another, and the context of the first 3 weeks limited everyones volume opportunities in the offense.  And he still has been this good.

LFG!  He has become one of my absolute favorite players to watch play

Considering how much the Bills have been emphasizing the running game, Shakir is having a great season.

He can only catch the ball when he’s targeted, and he’s catching those at a historic rate.

You have earned a mid season Bark Out. WOOF!

You’ll get the other one at the end of the season.

Eric Moulds lives in Baltimore and comes to our annual tailgate (he brought a bunch of his football pals one year) and he could not stop speaking how well he listens, trains, etc and this was two years ago.  It DOES help for players to have a mentor who teaches a young player to be a professional.

Props to @Alphadawg7 who declared in May 2022 he thinks Shakir could be elite.

Guys like Cosell were high on him too though I don't know if anyone said over two years ago he had elite potential.

Eric Moulds did.

Ha, well I don't disagree with your first post stating he arrived last year, and I certainly am not the only one who believed in Shakir, but most people didn't see it that way.  A lot of people felt like he wasn't going to be able to replicate what he was doing without Diggs drawing double teams.  There were lots of people all over this board including in this thread, other WR offseason threads, my thread in season about him last year, etc that were either throwing shade at him, doubting him, or limiting his ceiling as more of a role player than anything else.

Some common push back items were that they felt he wouldn't be able to get open enough with his short arms, that his efficiency would fall way off with a bigger sample size, etc.  Most saw him more as a complimentary piece that would likely struggle without a bonafide WR1 on the field.

But this year he has proved all that wrong and really arrived, not as a complimentary role player, but as a goto player who makes plays every time he is called upon.  He has shown he has elite hands, elite YAC ability, runs as tough as any WR in the league too.  He also blocks well, does all the dirty work, and is completely unselfish.

So he still took it up another notch this year and became a bonafide star IMHO

Sorry, Dawg, I don't buy all this Shakir love.

He's a nice solid player, but relying on stats like his catch percentage and his YAC to prove he's great is misguided. His catch rate and his YAC are high because he's a punt returner/ball carrier, not a true wideout.

Why is his catch rate high? Because the Bills run a lot of plays for him designed to get him the ball around the line of scrimmage with running room. He's an extended part of the running game. So, throws to him are easy, because he's supposed to be open to take what is an extended handoff.

His YAC is high for the same reason. The Bills want him to get the ball in space, because he has unique ball carrying skills, with excellent change of pace and direction.

That's what makes his numbers high.

He isn't creating his numbers by running the routes that Diggs or Coleman or Kincaid or Cooper or any of the other true receivers run.  He's not catching sideline balls, he's not catch back-shoulder balls, he's not catching deep balls.

He's excellent in this offense, and he's a real weapon, but when defenses begin to focus on playing him tight off the line of scrimmage, I think he will struggle.

I think he's always going to be a complementary receiver. He's never going to be a high-priced free agent.

No he's not playing the WR position like Diggs or Coleman or Cooper but I think your wrong about Kincaid.  He is running those routes just like Beasley did here or many other slot WR's on many other teams.  Yes this year his catches have come mostly around the line of scrimmage but he already had proven he can catch last year when he averaged almost 16 yards per catch.  He certainly wasn't catching everything at the line of scrimmage last year.  He has become a very productive slot WR and should be considered with the likes of Flowers or Reed who are good WR's.
