Also, I think other parts of the country may call them "Civil Defense Sirens"

They're "Tornado Sirens" around here.

My grandparents had an air raid siren at the end of their driveway.  For about 5 minutes on the first Tuesday of every month, you would just forget trying to have any conversations or be able the hear the tv while it was tested.  

 

EDIT: Just looked on Google street view, it's still there...
