Stupid.

Just f***ing stupid.

In order to save the KO, they made onside kicks essentially obsolete.

Can't wait until the NFL decides they need to fix punting the same way.

They were already obsolete (somewhere around a 5% recovery rate) unless they were a surprise onside kick (45%), which rarely happened. I think the current onside kick needs to be revamped as well.

To me this looks like an opening for the onside kick.  The kicker drops a slow curve over the receiving team’s head and it’s an advantage to kicking team to recover the ball.

How will onside kicks work?

Under the new rule, onside kicks will only be allowed in the fourth quarter, and only if a team is trailing. Also, the team that wants to attempt the onside kick will have to "declare" that it's trying it. This will eliminate the surprise onside kick.

I already hate it, add in the new tacking rule and why even pay big money for any defensive players anymore. You spend big money on a pass rusher and he gets held with no flags. The CB even breathes on a WR and pass interference. Skill position players on offense will be the new CEO’s Defensive players will be middle class with Special teams being the poor.

Honestly ruins kickoffs in my opinion. The entire optics of the “opening kickoff” is just gone.

The number of rule changes that have taken place in the last 10 years is dizzying. Watch a full game from 2000 (not that long ago!) and it feels like a different league.

Is the Bills okay with the current STC despite the major changes in the rules?

Not sure if anyone's pasted this link yet (paywalled, but, you know ...)

Best explanation I've seen. But I still don't have it down.

Agreed. The standard kick returner - pure speed guy - won't be the best fit under the new rule. As the article notes, field vision, quickness, improvisation will be key.

And as for kickers: the classic "big leg" guy who gets the highest touchback percentage will lose some value, although long field goals are still important. Some team will find a soccer player, Aussie rules football guy, someone else to be the "kickoff specialist" (maybe the kickoff/punter dual role will come back) who is adept at placing the ball in the optimal spot.

I'm all for making the game more interesting. Goodbye to the post-TD bathroom/fridge run ...

I think this will make the post TD bathroom/fridge run more commonplace.

And yet the NFL gets more and more popular.

You're really not gonna want to watch the kickoff returns now?

It is already dead.

I recall one last year: Sean Payton started his Broncos coaching career with a stupid onside kick that put his team in a hole, thinking he could repeat the true surprise Saints' Super Bowl onside kick.

This is probably the next thing to be addressed: how to make the onside kick relevant again, giving the kicking team at least a reasonable chance of getting possession, or maybe instituting a whole different rule as a substitute.

You beat me to it.

Just kick it through the end zone to get it at the 30.  Either way scoring will go up which is what the NFL wants.

That's one aspect of the XFL kickoff the NFL did not adopt. Touchbacks are a penalty (illegal kick) putting the ball on the 40.

Saw someone positing today that the Steelers are going to own the new rule.  They could put Fields back in there as one of the two receivers.  He could then run or throw back pass to the other side of the field as the coverage collapses in his direction.  Interesting thought to have a QB back there with some legs and arm talent.

Justin Fields has to worry more about reading more than half the field before adding ST plays to his arsenal.
