French Business Leaders Reject President Macron’s Demand to Divest from USA

April 6, 2025

According to French media, quoting multiple corporate leaders and company directors throughout France , the leadership of France’s biggest companies told Macron to ‘get stuffed’ following the French president’s demand to divest their interests from America.

President Macron ordered 50 of the largest companies with positions in the USA to attend an emergency economic meeting at Elysée Palace. As reported by French media, “Some of us fell out of our chairs,” confided one of the 50 or so French business leaders invited.”

“We are not in an administered economy,” thunders the leader of an employers’ movement. And the CEO of a CAC 40 giant bluntly asserts: “I don’t give a damn about what Macron says. We have operations in the United States. There is no question of abandoning them just like that. We must respect our commitments to our employees, our customers and our shareholders.

The American consumer market is the most valuable consumer market in the world.  We do not have the largest population; however, we do have the largest population with the ability to purchase things.  It is the ability to buy stuff that makes access to the U.S. market the golden ticket for foreign company sales and profit.

Still? You sure about that? I mean before Trump, yes it was.

Now? With massive taxes?

I don't like a lot about these changes either, but some of you all have been creating threads and panic posts for ten days straight at all hours.  Are you all even sleeping at any point? Not healthy. Even if you are 100% against the tariffs, that is no way to live life.

It's funny because these are the same people that dismissed inflation and cost issues for three years telling us that it was a conspiracy theory and that the  complainers were all losers who needed to learn how to manage their money better and get a real job.

People on the right shouldn't fall into the same pattern. A large dip in retirement and savings balances is a fully valid concern and deserves empathy, especially when we are all seeing it. Some of us have faith that it will recover fast, others don't but lets not fall into the same trap as they did under Biden.

The difference here is that Biden stumbled and bumbled his way into runaway inflation. It appears that he actually didn't see (thanks to his economic/political team, mostly the political part) the inflation risk of pushing even more federal deficit spending.

Trump is actively trying to disrupt the global economy, and is counseling patience through upcoming hard times. He deliberately is making this downturn happen.

I agree with this too. I hope he and his economic team of experts are right!

I think this is all Trump. Bessent, given his background, cannot be a true believer. Neither is Hassett. These are smart guys.

Unfortunately Trump seems to trust Lutnick most, and he's smart but a total self-interested greedy jackass.

The Penguins Will Be Alright—Turns Out There's Good Reason We're Putting Tariffs on Unoccupied Islands

FTA:

One of the main points they’ve been using to mock the president is that the administration is enacting tariffs on remote islands that have no residents. Leftists were quick to pounce

I admit it, when I first saw that news, I was a bit perplexed myself. It turns out that they’re not a boneheaded error, however, and according to Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, there’s a reason for them. Appearing on CBS News’ “Face the Nation” with Margaret Brennan Sunday, he explained that they purposefully included those areas to close loopholes.

I've been pretty impressed with Bessent. I think he's part of this decision

Not plausible with respect to the penguin islands, since there is no way to trans-ship items there to make them ostensibly "products of McDonald Island."

That's why I'm going with the simplest explanation: they used an AI to populate the name of every "country" in the world, probably based on domain name assignments. It just makes more sense than some real human adding the penguin islands to the list.

That's the best they could come up with after three days?

For those who still believe the MAGA ideology is about returning power to Congress and the states, I ask for your take on Trump refusing to give up tariff power.
